There's chatter from entertainment journalists about some big news tomorrow. Whatever it is isn't Aquaman, Superman or Snyder Cut related.

So, massive grain of salt. Rumor is thus: The Birds of Prey movie will feature Harley Quinn, Huntress, Black Canary and Katana. The plot revolves around them trying to save Cassandra Cain from David Cain, her father.

If true feels of studio trying to chase money over any internal continuity/consistency. DCEU Harley is still very much a villain and a criminal, why would she be saving Cass? And why would any of the heroes willingly work with the Joker's lover/dragon, who was last seen busting out of prison with her puddin'?

Could be that her underworld connections make her the only one with a viable lead and they blackmail her into helping them out.

A big set visit was held. Lots of potential spoilers but this was interesting:

When Warner Brothers and DC gave James Aquaman, he was only interested in doing it if it could be a departure from what had become the DC brand of superhero, which, whether you like it or don’t like it, it just wasn’t how he saw Aquaman being done. And so, it was always much more Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone. And, y’know, both of those movies have such great elements of comedy, real jeopardy, great characters and that’s what he brings to the table here. And that is absolutely what the movie is. It’s character comedy between Arthur and Mera. It’s that great African Queen type rapport that also exists, but, y’know, people from two different worlds having to come together. There’s a lot of great comedy that’s probably closer to what one sees in Wonder Woman than anything you’ve seen prior in the DC movies.

Good man.

Anyway, spoilery details:

  • The film is set in the present day but will also have extensive flashbacks showing Aquaman's origin.

  • The main plot has Aquaman trying to find the trident of a former king of Atlantis while being pursued by both Ocean Master and Black Manta.

  • Ocean Master is seeking the trident, which will give him the power to wipe out the surface world once and for all.

  • Ocean Master is attacking coastal cities and wants to force the seven kingdoms of the ocean to work with him to destroy the humans, as he blames them for polluting the oceans.

  • Black Manta is the secondary villain but is being primed for a bigger role in future DCEU productions.

  • Black Manta's origin is taken straight from Geoff Johns' Aquaman run, so presumably the origin they're going with is the one where he blames Aquaman for killing his dad. Ocean Master is the one who gives Manta the technology he uses to build his suit.

  • While the film is much lighter and more humorous than most of the previous DCEU films, Wan still got in some of his horror influence with the scenes involving the Trench, which he did as an homage to Creature from the Black Lagoon.

  • Aquaman grew up an angry drifter because he feels like his mother abandoned him, as she left him with his dad on the surface world to protect him from the other Atlanteans.

  • It seems Aquaman's dad is still alive in this version.

  • There's gonna be a big underwater duel between Aquaman and Ocean Master as part of the ritual to decide the ruler of Atlantis.

  • There's also gonna be a huge fight scene between the armies of Atlantis and the Fisherman King's people (Those green folks in the image from the other day).

  • James Wan went in a completely different direction than Snyder, something the cast and crew frequently commented on.

Here's the deets on Birds of Prey, courtesy of The Wrap.

-Black Canary, aka Dinah Laurel, is a fantastic hand-to-hand combatant who comes from a family of crime fighters. Her father, Larry Lance, was a police officer, while her mother (also named Dinah) was the original Black Canary.

-Helena Bertinelli, aka Huntress, is a vigilante operating out of Gotham City.

-Cassandra Cain is one of the world’s greatest martial artists, and also a vigilante.

-Renee Montoya is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department. Montoya is openly lesbian, and during The New 52 comics she takes on a costumed identity, becoming the Question.

The villain is described as being a Batman villain who has never been onscreen before.

[up][up] Define "on-screen." Because Black Mask was the Big Bad in Batman Under The Red Hood, which despite not being theatrical, was still a movie (and a great one, at that).

Shazam cover from EW. And the article.

Zachary Levi throws off the perfect Shazam! pitch: “It’s Superman meets Big!” declares the affable former Chuck star who’s squeezing into a skin-tight suit to play what’s perhaps the ultimate daydream-come-true superhero across all of comic book lore: An ordinary 14-year-old kid named Billy Batson who can transform into a grown-up superhero with an array of heroic powers by uttering a single world (“Soundhound!” No wait: “Shazam!”) and then return to his regular self whenever he wants.

Zachary Levi has said the magic word to unlock an exclusive EW special issue (see it below) that you can get your hands on at Comic-Con in San Diego this week (or buy it online here). The issue includes a deep-dive feature story going behind-the-scenes of the first big-screen adaptation of Shazam!

“It’s complete wish-fulfillment — if you scour all of DC and Marvel there are very few characters that are actually stoked to be a superhero,” Levi enthuses. “They’re not brooding, they’re not put out, like ‘Oh dammit, I gotta save the world again!’ Billy Batson is like Peter Parker, they’re thrilled to have these powers and can’t wait to try them out.”

And then there’s that iconic apple-red suit, which the actor bulked up in the gym to help fill out. “It fits me like a glove, because it is a f—ing glove,” Levi quips. “It’s super tight, but it’s great. I look and feel like this jacked superhero.”

“From my perspective, Shazam! represents the next step in the evolution of the DC brand,” producer Peter Safran notes. “You had Wonder Woman, then Aquaman [coming Dec. 21] is another big step, then comes Shazam! — all different movies, but all have a unique tone that moves away from the darkness of the prior DC movies.”

And the first look at Ocean Master's costume. Straight out of the comics.

Since it’s almost certainly going to be a female villain, I’d second thinking it’ll probably be Shiva. Especially given Cassandra.

I’m glad it’s a variation of the actual Birds of Prey and not Harley and Friends the Gotham City Sirens with the Birds of Prey name plastered onto them.

Edit: It just hit me that Cass is getting a movie. I’m jnternally screaming with hype right now.

Huh indeed, good on Cass. [tup] [awesome]

Especially after being left out on the Batman Ninja anime flim she might get the chance to be in something far, far bigger.

He seemed to just hate a lot of Legacy Characters, and Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown in particular really got thrown under the bus during his tenure.
