If they took them out as assist trophies that may, and I mean MAY, mean they have plans to turn them into playable characters. Not base game characters mind you, I'm talking DLC.

Looking at the Sonic songs they've announced, they all seem to be post-Adventure stuff with next to nothing from the classic series.

I'm rather baffled that they just didn't confirm Shadow as an assist months ago; him and Isaac being shown off as AT's back in August or even online in the interim would have mitigated much of the internet salt.
