Alright. Here goes.

The world of Welena. A rather mundane place, in most respects. Except one. Upon birth, all official residents of the eatern continent, called Yelan, are bonded with a creature known as a Companion. Other than that, this world is very similar to our Earth.

Companions come in many different shapes and sizes, from electric mice to massive behemoths of flesh and steel. Companions are used for a variety of purposes, including manual labor and... personal services. But the aspect of Companions that this story will focus on is combat.

Companion fighting is looked down upon in most circles and is currently prohibited by most city-states. But still, the thrill of seeing the creature you've been with since childhood locked in life or death combat is irresistable to some. Most notably, your characters. And mine, but that's no surprise. Our characters and their Companions are entering an underground Companion fighting circuit in New Relhama, one of Yelan's most prominant city-states.

The character sheet looks something like this.

Questions: Can Companions be humanoid? Why are some Companions sentient and others not? How are they linked, exactly? Legally? Spiritually? Mentally? Is Yelan the only continent/country/whatever to have bonded creatures? Do immigrants get them upon coming in, or is it only their kids that get them? How is a Companion chosen? Do they appear out of nowhere as an extension of the person, or are they picked at birth?

Most importantly; what ARE the Companions? Are they like the Soul creature thingies like in Garth Nix's Seventh Tower series? Are they like the Fury thingies from Codex Alera? Like Pokemon? What?

Wow. That's... that's a lot of questions. Not going to answer all of them. Some things I have to keep secret, for plot's sake, you know. But anyway.

To be bonded with a companion, you have to be a born citizen of one of Yelan's city states. Imigrants are not allowed Companions, but their children are. Each Companion bondes itself to a human differently. Sometimes it's a mental link, sometimes it's biological, hell, sometimes Companion lavae will have their bonded human sign legal documents.

@Bindlestick, Does that mean a Companion can be older than their human? How much so before it gets weird? What happens if a human's companion dies? Can a companion be humanoid?

Companions can be older then their bonded human, but only in extremly rare cases. In these cases, age is reletive. A Companion that looks and acts like a 20 year old man could be around 5 or 6 years old in actuality.

Companions can be humanoid, though some of them stretch the definition of the word.

When someone's Companion dies, it's generally viewed as a sad occasion. A funeral is held, condolences are given, the same thing as would befit a dead human. Afterwards, however, is different. Many jobs become out of reach, and if the Companion dies when the human is young they will be subject to a lot of taunting and bullying and such.

I think it's like those spirit-animal thingies like in His Dark Materials.

At any rate, this might be interesting.

Really, Companions could fill any of those specific niches. Usually, a Companion acts as a combination pet/babysitter. Oh hai Anno and Loco.

Name: Sarah Newbern

Gender: Female

Appearance: A short, thin girl with black hair that falls below her shoulders. Her nose is quite large, and her skin is yellowish. Other than that, no distinguishable features.

Personality: She's a soft-spoken girl. She's not much of one for exercise or fighting herself, but her Companion is more than good enough at that for both of them.

Background: Not really much to say. She had a normal life, until she got bored ad decided to spend her time getting Rayea to fight other willing Companions.

Other details: Sarah is anemic. That's why she's not very athletic, and why her skin is oddly coloured.

Name: Rayea, Rayezest for full.

Appearance: He looks something like Raidramon. However, he doesn't have the lightning bolt on his head, and he has a pair of black wings, about ten feet across each that he can use to glide.

Abilities: He's very fast. His wings are very sharp, and can cut through a lot of things, although they're not unbreakable.

He can funnel electricity through his body and discharge it through his teeth, claws or wings.

Sentient: Yes.

Personality: He likes to fight, although he does live for other things. He's very protective of Sarah- snarling at anyone who tries to initiate physical contact with her. Other than that, he likes to run and glide. He tries to practice acrobatics, and he's gotten fairly good at it.

What the hell, I've got very little of importance going on. Waste most of my time on these fora anyways...

Character Sheet

Name: Douglas Hachers

Gender: Male

Appearance: A middle-aged man whose skin has become tanned and leathery from years working on the fields. Not real short, but not at all tall. Looks thinner than most, but it's all wiry muscle underneath. He has spent far too much time cultivating his thick bushy mustache and not enough taming his wild and short brown hair. His regular clothes tend to include boots, worn jeans, and the required blue-collar plaid shirt. He most certainly does not wear a hat of any sort, only large sunglasses.

Personality: Doug is first and foremost focused and nigh single-minded. He is a man who Gets Shit Done Right The First Time, mostly so that he can laze about afterwords. Not unfriendly, but definitely a quiet type. Capable of being incredibly loyal past the point of stupidity and has more than his fair share of pride in himself and his companion.

Background: Doug was raised by a rural family in a farming community. It was here that his work ethic was forged into him, "Work 'til the work gets done." Even when he left home, he didn't wander off too far, and has spent most of his life working farm equipment, harvesting, and shipping food. Of course farming, while a necessary part of any society, does not a wealthy man make. Doug entered underground Companion fighting competitions to earn money to pay off some massive debts following a bad drought. Found he was pretty damned good at it, and has kept on fighting illegally as a hobby (and supplemental income source).

Other details: None that I can think of right now.

Companion Sheet

Name: Horroce

Appearance: Horroce is living proof that there is some celestial entity in the universe that is an outright sick bastard. Its body appears to be made of mutilated human body parts held together by some unknown force. Its 'main head' consists of a lump of flesh with three humanoid faces side by side. The 'eye-sockets' are just indentions, but the 'mouths' are its real eyelids, each holding a much too large roving eye. Horroce's torso looks almost like a normal human's, except for the small, hand-shaped bumps rising or reaching out of its chest and back. Its feet and legs are wide and thick and almost look like a series of human legs fused together, but thankfully normally just look more like formless stumps. Worst of all are Horroce's hands and arms. Each arm is nominally thick except for the places where the skin has apparently ripped and exposed what looks like a massive spinal cord. Rather than hands Horroce has another two lumps of flesh with face shapes. But instead of eyes, these face's mouths hide the tongue-like prehensile tendrils that it uses for handling objects. Horroce is a large, humanoid, reddish nightmare.

Abilities: Very physically strong, and tougher than a big fleshy horror would look like. Its tendril-tongues can extend to about 10 feet in length and be used as whips or to grasp faraway objects. Mostly Horroce gets by with terrifying the opposition with it mere physical presence and beating them into submission.

Sentient: No, thank goodness. Horroce has the intelligence of an animal, like say a dog. Most of its actions require prompting from Doug, beyond basic survival instincts.

Personality: Obedient to Doug, who grew up with it, and fiercely loyal and protective of him. When not ordered to fight, however, Horroce is very docile, just standing around or doing whatever work it's given.

Other notes: No one is entirely sure what gender Horroce is, despite going around stark naked all the time. And no one other than Doug seems to know how it eats, what with no visible mouth. No one is in any particular rush to find out either.

I just wanted to see what I could get away with here.

  • Name: Ryan de Ghiaccio
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: Ryan is a young man of about 15, who takes on an average height of 5'7" and a lithe build. He has medium-length dark blond hair and cold blue eyes. His hair is almost permanently messy, with a cowlick on the right side of his head. He usually wears a light blue hoodie with snowflake patterns on it and darker blue sleeves. This is usually worn with jeans and blue sneakers.
  • Personality: Ryan is a very energetic person, seeming to have unlimited energy. He is also a very bright guy, astounding people with his perceptiveness. However, he is quite clumsy, and often trips over things in his overzealousness. He is usually a pacifist, tolerant of almost any kind of person. Which is understandable, considering his preferences. He absolutely abhors a bully, which is the only case he'd condone (non-consensual) violence against someone.
  • Background: Ryan was born in the cold northern area of Yelan, and so his companion was obviously affiliated with ice. Of course, while his companion was of the same age as him, he appeared to be quite a bit older, by five or six years at the very least. Ryan, of course, didn't mind. In fact, he often used his companion as a shield from bullies at school, which was a tremendous help. When Ryan was about five, his family moved to New Relhama, as his mother's job got relocated. He has since grown up in the city, and though he had learned how to handle bullies, he had grown bitter at the very concept.
  • Other details: None that I can think of at the moment.

  • Name: Boreas
  • Appearance: Boreas appears to be a strong young man of 20 or 21, standing well above six foot and reasonably muscled. His short hair and sideburns is snow white, and he has icy blue eyes. His skin is very light, looking almost cold, though it does not seem sickly despite it. His attire usually consists of a blue scarf with feathery ends to it and a pair of jeans with lots of buckles on them. He rarely wears a shirt or shoes, though if he needs to the both are plain and white.
  • Abilities: Boreas has an innate control of ice and snow, to create shields, weapons, and outright attack. Aside from that, he's quite skilled in areas such as parkour and gymnastics, though only so much as to be able to move around a battle field no matter it's boundaries.
  • Sentient: Yes
  • Personality: Boreas is a very cold, distant person. He rarely speaks unless he has to or is otherwise spoken to. However, his demeanor hides a passion for fighting and the rush of doing it, to the chagrin of his human. He also seems to have a hidden soft side, which only Ryan has seen so far, but who knows. Aside from that, he seems to have an extreme dislike of prejudice in all it's forms.
  • Other notes: Boreas is gay, but in no rush to start flirting with anyone.

Name: Carosso Rusathi

Gender: Male

Appearance: A platinum blond young man with grayish looking eyes and a muscular, but not bulky look to him. He usually wears a long sleeved wool shirt with some red parts near the front, black long gloves, black formal looking pants and steel toed boots. His whole right arm is not all the way right, mostly because of a reaction between him and his companion Arc, after a nightmarish event happened between them.

Personality: He is essentially the type that never grew up from being a kid, he dislikes feeling physical pain, and so kills everyone who might have the slightest chance of causing him any pain. Even getting hit in the hand will make him writhe in pain on the floor as his fast acting healing factor makes it go away. He seems to dislike everyone else, and never even trusts people he seldom hires for his own gain. In order to speed up his kill em all plans, he randomly selects people with bitterness in their hearts and makes them like him. He thinks of killing like pest extermination.

Background: He started as the noble son of the Rusathi family with the Companion named Arc, until a powerful gang of bandits destroyed the family and direly hurt Carosso via a primitive cannon, prompting Arc to rip himself to pieces and use his power to seal his pieces to the areas missing in Carosso. This resulted in a lot of mental trauma inside of Carosso, and made him feel that Humans Are Bastards for essentially depriving him of the only one who ever understood him.

Arc died in a way, leaving Carosso alone and still very badly wounded and not able to activate his healing factor just yet. He wound up direly mistreated further by anyone who saw him for being a freak, and in the World at large, his type became known as a Mergios. His body spent some time adjusting to its new configuration and he became very powerful in secret, but had no idea how to use these powers at all.

He encountered a man named Steve and his Companion Sheryl a year later, and that was how Carosso learned how his new body functioned: He needed to take into his Ports a Companion once in a while. He did this on Sheryl and then broke Steve's mind into little pieces. Following this, he discovered Arc was not as dead as he had thought, and now the two seemed to share the body, with Arc sometimes emerging from Carosso's back.

He began his next phase of his plan by finding bitter, sometimes evil people and combining them with their Companions and creating more Mergios. These people are seldom thankful, and often attack Carosso for turning them into freakish monsters. The only one who has been thankful was a prostitute named Elena, who became Carosso's Dark Action Girlfriend Elena the Crimson Nail, his only real friend and a major Pet the Dog for him.

Other details: Aside his healing factor, he has some telepathic and telekinetic abilities, and Arc's Light power, though these are limited by his state of mind, and how much power is in him at the time. All these abilities were Arc's, originally.

Name: Arc

Appearance: Before Absorbing Rites, he was an odd, Schitzo Tech like angel with metal skin and large wings made of blades. He had four glowing golden eyes. Following his Rites, he now appears as something like a familiar, darting his single hand and arm left possibly out of anywhere on Carosso. His head usually stays on Carosso's shoulder.

Abilities: Telekinesis, telepathy, The Healing Factor, and Control of "Light", he can make his wings of blades come out of Carosso at any point on him.

Sentient: Yes

Personality: Very altruistic, willing to die for Carosso's visions, and very blind to Carosso's faults, much like a Draco in Leather Pants fan. He technically already gave his life for Carosso, but due to technicalities, the two now are forever bonded. Which was just what Arc wanted all along: living forever with Carosso, who he apparently loved.

Other notes: The powers of Arc are dependent on if Carosso has been "eating regularly", and "has a healthy psyche" in Arc's own words.

Imma' enter my character now.

Name: Zach Walis

Age:21

Gender: Male

Appearance: Zach is a tall man, around 6'6. His hair is gresy and unkempt, usually tucked under his fedora. He as a sort of rugged charm about him, as if dangerous things are bound to happen when he's around. Which they do. His features are pointed and chissled. A rough goatee, dull blue eyes, and yellowed teeth comprise his face. He tends to wear a long, flowing tenchcoat when conducting business.

Personality: Zach is an inquisitive guy. It's part of his job, after all. Zach refuses to take anything seriously, but will act serious when he needs to. Overall, he's pretty laid back in his dealings with others.

Background: Zach grew up in the slums of New Relhama, raised by his drunken mother. His father was a compulsive gambler, always coming home with take-out in hand and an apology on his lips. Zach grew up watching crime shows (or at least, the few his family's meager income could afford.*) He dreamed of becoming a detective. He wanted to be the one to find out who did what, the one to solve the crime, the one to pull out his sunglasses while uttering a clever pun. Zach's parents died when he was ten, his mother having commited a murder-suicide. He was raised by his Companion, Esmerel. When Zach turned 18, he signed up for police academy. He graduated, his police career being long and not very remarkable. Eventually, he broke off from the police force and became a private detective with Esmerel. The NRPD still consults him on matters from time to time. Currently, Zach and Esmerel are undercover, investigating an illegal fighting ring in the sewers of New Relhama.

  • Television is a recent invention, having only been invented ten or fifteen years ago.

  • Companion

Name: Esmerel

Appearance: Esmerel looks to be a teenage girl of around sixteen years. Her eyes are hazel and conspicuously large. She stands at around 5'3. Her skin his bone white and clammy. Her gray hair hangs back on her head, stopping at the waist. She constantly wears a schoolgirl uniform for no particular reason. That's about where the similarities to a human being end. In place of feet, Esmerel has small wheels contructed of bone. How she is able to balance herself on these things is unknown, but it's best not to think about it. Esmerel's foreamrs are dominated by two massive, bony clubs. Three sticklike manipulators extend out of each arm, constantly fiddling with something or other. How she manages to even move with them is also best left unknown.

Abilities: Esmerel's wheel-like feet allow here to move at great speeds and turn on a dime. Somehow. This, combined with her enormous bone clubs, makes her a force to be reckoned with. However, focusing her weight on two points makes it difficult to move around larger battlefields without falling over constantly.

Sentient: Yes.

Personality: Esmerel is a rather exciteable girl, always willing to help someone out. Though, definitions of help may varry. Esmerel is the stereotypical girly-girl, in essentium. She also considers herself a healer, though, like most Companions, she has little to no grasp of human biology.

Other notes: In retrospect, neither of these characters were very well thought out. Oh well.
