And I watched the English version again after I realized that his was Bryan Cranston voicing Isamu before he became well-known in Breaking Bad, the Total Recall remake and the Godzilla remake.

Too bad that Animaze didn't bring him back for the planned movie version in English due to his involvement in saving Private Ryan.

PS - I do need to ask if any Macross Plus character still alive (aside from Isamu) has been told on their status via supplement materials.

[up] Apart from a brief vocal cameo from Isamu in one of the Frontier movies, we've heard nary a peep from the Plus cast. Events from Plus have been referenced, but not the characters themselves.

Oh yeah, anyone know the fate of the characters in the photo novel "Macross: The Ride"?

Don't have access to any translated chapter and I just want to get the low down.

An interview with Carl Macek in 2010. Note that in the interview that they talk a bit about Macross being sold by ADV before.

so anybody see the Kickstarter Harmony Gold is doing for a new Robotech project?Well, any smart and well-informed person will know that this Kickstarter MUST NOT be supported

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZmWbivW20U

there are even people making small donations so that they can tell in their Kickstarter page to not support it (they will probably remove their pledge when it's almost finished),but seeing the project already at 42.000 saddens me.These people are blinded by nostalgia thinking they will get another classic Robotech series when all they will get will probably be another Shadow Chronicles, and,as a Kickstarter bonus, cockblocking the Macross franchise in the west for an even longer time...

It's official. The next Macross is known as "Macross Delta".

Auditions are now held for the next female seiyu to be at the main cast.

Can someone please explain what exactly is the deal behind the Screwed by the Lawyers and No Export for You troubles of this franchise? I had just stumbled upon Macross's example entry in the former and the latter's entry in Trivia.Macross, and it boggles my mind trying to imagine how this clusterf*** came to exist... mostly because 1) I don't know where to start looking, 2) AFAICT, neither entry answers the how or why, they just explain the what and who, and 3) the entries say that the legal mess is on both sides of the Pacific, not just on the USA side.

I pieced together what happened from Wikipedia.

Studio Nue (the guys who made the originals series) were strapped for cash, so they agreed to be sponsored by Big West Advertising. When the project ran overbudget due to Big West initially not believing it was going to be a hit, Big West contracted Tatsunoko Production with a partnership including international distribution. Tatsunoko sub-licensed Harmony Gold to make Robotech but when Macross merchandise started to be sold overseas, Harmony Gold had a California court declare that they have unlimited and permanent rights to the franchise outside Japan, going so far as completely omitting the Japanese production crew from Robotech's credits (which makes it a case of plagiarism) and issuing cease-and-desist letters to everyone selling Macross merchandise. Nue and Big West took Tatsunoko to a Japanese court who ruled that Nue owns the intellectual property, which Tatsunoko and by extension HG have no control over.

Now Macross' creators are supremely pissed at HG and HG are refusing to give up their international rights despite not actually making anything Robotech anymore, instead using their rights solely to prevent anyone else from profiting from Macross.

At least, that's what I understood from the whole thing.

So, I'm somewhere around ep 10 in Macross Frontier, and I've gotta say, I'm really 'meh' about this show so far. It really doesn't grab me like Robotech or Seven did.

But then, I didn't finish either of those either - I've seen something like the first half of Robotech: The Macross Saga, and of Macross Seven, I've only seen the first proper episode... but I have seen the whole of the Encore and Dynamite OV As, which were cool and awesome respectively.

I think Macross 7 probably has my favorite songs of the franchise up to this point.

Nekki Basara: "FAAAIIIIAAAA!!!"

The audience: "BOMBAAAAAAA!!!!"

<epic rocking ensues>

[up]The best thing about Frontier?

The final battle. It's FUCKING EPIC. Hang in there and you'll see.

It's also implied but not explicitly stated on-screen that the Vajra are what the Protoculture was trying to mimic with their various creations, most importantly the Birdman from Zero and the Protodeviln from Seven. Especially the Birdman.

... And HG wants to spite Nue (and, to a lesser extent, the other Japanese companies involved in this fiasco) by threatening to sue any North American company that approaches or is approached by Nue for licensing Macross? How does that work when they don't own the franchise or any prior licensing rights (currently valid ones, anyway) in the first place?

Surprisingly well. Our patent offices don't care if you're using it, if your name's on the copyright, you own it. It's why you don't see Marauders or Warhammers anymore.

Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great

Again, what copyright? They don't own the work that they blatantly plagiarized, and the national court of the creator company's homeland has already made a ruling that effectively stripped HG of any rights over the work material in question.

... Better yet, why doesn't Nue sue HG in a US court over their plagiarism, now that it's asserted its control over the original franchise?

Nue is a Japanese company. I'm not sure they can turn to a US court without being represented by a US-based subsidiary.

It's been written on one of the pages you mentioned above that Harmony Gold would probably lose the lawsuit against someone with deep enough pockets - it's just that nobody with deep enough pockets is interested in joining the fray.

... Well, I do hope the Japanese companies learned their lesson from this debacle. As for Harmony Gold... All they're getting from me is a double-handed one-finger salute.
