Playing Yugioh with THREE DECKS!
Eh, I see the similarities, with the huge variation in spells. But the way both characters access those spells is completely different.
After watching that video, I unironically think a Yugioh fighting game where every character has a full deck of 40 cards is totally plausible now.

That is absolutely terrible I will never play that character seriously and so few people ever will that it's such an infinitesimally small amount of the playerbase that it's next to nothing.
Perfect character S+ love it.
Bleye knows Sabers.Asuka has inspired me to think about the viability of a Yu-Gi-Oh fighting game (that actually uses Yu-Gi-Oh card game mechanics). Here's what I have so far:
You play as the human characters from the anime with their pre-set decks, and Monsters, Spells, and Traps appear in front of that character to Attack, Defend, or Activate. It is a 6-button fighting game, with the buttons being ABCDEF. ABCDE inputs correspond to the 5 Monster and Spell/Trap zones and F corresponds to the hand. 236 and 214 special moves correspond to the Extra Deck. 22 special moves correspond to Graveyard effects. Both players have a 40-60 card deck and an up to 15 card Extra Deck.
Both players start with 8,000 Life Points. Both players instantly draw 5 cards with 5 seconds to play Monsters or set Spells/Traps, not able to Attack or activate effects until the Round starts, when they both draw a card. Both players continue drawing 1 card every 5 seconds. If a player loses all of their Life Points or tries to draw with no cards in their deck, they lose the Round. A Match is the best of 3 Rounds.

Well hey, if Arcsys ever makes a Shonen Jump fighter, they'll have the framework for Yugi.
Character Specific Page cleanupIt's crazy, because I've always thought "I wonder what a fighting game character with a luck/randomness based moveset would look like" - specifically thinking of a card deck as an example - and I always stopped myself thinking no fighting game audience would ever accept such a thing.
And lo and behold, the true madmen at Arcsys said "to hell with that" and did it anyway. Every time I think Arcsys is done surprising me with character concepts, they do this.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.I still can't believe that it's not just a character based around randomly drawn cards, it's a character with THREE DECKS. It's the 3 decks thing that really blows my mind. That's 90 cards. Even just having a single 30-card deck would be insane, but they decided that wasn't nearly complex enough and gave him 3 decks.
The reason this convinces me that a Yu-Gi-Oh fighting game wouldn't be insane is because every character in a Yu-Gi-Oh game would be HALF as complex as Asuka.

Inb4 some insane pro player memorizes Asuka's random seed Amanuma-style and is able to perfectly predict exactly what they're going to get for an entire match.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Oh god, that is the ideal way to play the character.
Officially the fighting game character with the highest skill ceiling EVER.
My favorite part is that it actually makes sense lore-wise for Asuka to just be the most needlessly complicated bullcrap ever. "Needlessly complicated bullcrap" defines like 80% of all the things the character has ever done.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. In a way thats like 60% "this just makes sense to him" and 40% "he's handicapping himself"
Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireThe only character I can think of who is similar to Asuka is Hero in Smash Bros, except he has half the number of spells, only one "deck" to draw from, and his random spells are just 1 out of 4 special moves, which means you don't even need to use them to play him because the other 3 are fine.
Asuka REVOLVES around his gimmick, you literally could not play him without learning the ins and outs of his random spells.
He really just isn't playing the same game as everyone else. The Yu-Gi-Oh comparisons are just spot on.
Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireI found this chart for the top fighting game sales.
Street Fighter being number 4 is especially surprising when you consider the following factors:
- Tekken (number 3) has only 7 main entries (with an eighth one upcoming) and used to be Play Station exclusive up until the 5th game. The first game released on consoles in 95.
- Super Smash Bros (number 2) has only four main entries and is still a Nintendo exclusive.
- Mortal Kombat (number 1) is extremely controversial due to its violent content and was the subject of a particularly infamous campaign regarding censorship in games during the 90s. There's also its history of being banned in certain countries. Up until 2015, every MK game was banned in Germany. MK9 is banned in South Korea and was banned in Australia until 2023. MK11 is banned in Indonesia, Japan, Mainland China and Ukraine.

Weird, I honestly thought Marvel would be higher than that. Also, Smash has 5 entries (6 if you count 3DS and Wii U as separate games).
Gavan, Let's get jiggy! No really dead or alive over marvel is the real surprising thing here.
It actually feels incorrect? Marvel to this day can be found in arcades even the crappy ones with barely any actual videogame cabinets. Dead or Alive I don't even feel like has a presence among anyone under the age of 30 lol.
MK being the biggest isn't surprising, it's been around for nearly 30 years and its niche as THE goriest fighting game has yet to be dethroned.
I think an interesting thing to note about the top 3 is that they all popularized or started a trend among fighting games and thus easily the most influential. Okay so not so much Tekken since technically VF started the 3D fighting genre but it was one of the spearheads.

Poor, underappreciated Soul Series...
FC: SW-1445-0294-1719/PSN: TekkenGirl4Lyfe/Currently playing: Fire Emblem: The Blazing BladeDoes DOA include the mountains of DLC outfits and beach spinoffs in its numbers?
If it doesn't then I feel like this chart is a lie.
Help me. I can't get it out of my head.Lytheto is back again with....lobby shenigains of umvc3?! ....And Maximillian Dood is there too?!
In a bit of random news, the first spin off game to the mecha gacha game Iron Saga will be Iron Saga Vs. Not much is known about the game at the moment. It appears to be a one on one 2D fighting game. There is currently no news on both the release date or what console it will be on yet. The trailer showcases the move sets of several playable characters. The characters that are from the original game are Kaguya, Qing Long, Susanoo, and Mephisto. The other characters shown in the trailer are Mazinger Z, Boss Robot, Great Mazinger, and Dancouga (in its Final form). I might be mistaken, but this might be the closest thing to an official Super Robot Wars fighting game yet.
Wasn't expecting crossover characters, yeah.
"I'll show you fear, there is no hell, only darkness." My twitterDamn, you weren't kidding. The semi-SD designs and animations definitely look ripped straight out of SRW. Gameplay looks pretty neat too.
Gavan, Let's get jiggy!
