Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

It appears the new "Spidey and his Amazing Friends" cartoon will take another stab at giving Miles a new codename: "Spin", according to this Christmas-themed book due to be published.

I was looking up stuff about One More Day out of curiosity about the Nightwalkers, beings that supposedly keep fate in line and defy efforts to change the past, and found they only appeared in that one issue and never before or since.

In a couple years I’m sure they’re going to be retconned into space phantoms or part of Mephisto

I get why they don't want to have a bunch of Spider-Men and Women, but I don't like Ghost Spider or any of the assorted names they've tried to give Miles.

Ghost Spider is fiine as a codename but it doesn't work for Gwen

It might work better for Miles, actually, considering his invisible. At least its miles better than Spy-D.

And why not leave aside that Jessica Drew that nobody cares about, and make Gwen the Spider-Woman? Marketing demands so: she has already appeared in a film seen by the big public, as "Spider-Woman", and she already has fans and even cosplayers. Why go through all the trouble of making them both accept her under a new name and accept a new character under that name, when doing things the other way is so much easier? Is Jessica Drew really worth it?

Funnily enough, Jessica Drew technically wasn't the first Spider-Woman. That honor went to Valerie of the Electric Company in Spidey Super Stories.

Jessica Drew oddly enough is just one of those characters where every couple of years a writer and/or editor takes a sudden interest in and tries to give a big push, starting when Bendis originally got the keys to The Avengers. Probably also not a coincidence that around the same time, Batwoman kind of became a breakout character over in DC so Marvel likely thought Jessica could be their equivalent if they put enough effort behind her.

The current Spider-Woman run is selling much better than the last Ghost-Spider did. Saying that no one cares about Jess is way off base.

Changing it to Spider Woman for name recognition kinda makes sense, but we can have two Spider Women like how we have Peter and Miles.

Well, she called herself Spider-Woman in the movie (and it was only her and Penny, who was the younger one, so she had more claim to it there than usual).

It wasn’t even a problem because Gwen should be off in her own universe and you can have different versions of a character. Kiiinda what spider verse was predicated on

It’s only become a problem with the dumping of nearly everything that made Gwen unique and making her just another Amazing Friend, with some baggage for Pete

Sins Rising pretending that all the spider-people were anything more than vague acquantainces was absurd and I hated that. He has a connection with Miles, but not so much the other guys.

In hindsight they should prolly have done a little bit more with Peter and Gwen interacting, since their versions of each other who were extremely important to them, died horribly.

There should be a lot of complex feelings from meeting each other.

So on a slightly another topic, I still kind of got this pipedream that if Young Avengers ever finally gets a reunion book that Anya can get added to the roster just so she can finally get to do something.

It does remind me that I’m bothered Peter and Miles don’t interact much.

Like the 2 have a compelling partnership and mentorship but they rarely team-up now aside from hues-starring in each other’s titles.

Marvel never synergizes what people want

You’d think spider verse the movie would have inspired more interaction between them

No instead we just get Jessica Drew guest-starring a lot in Spider group shots despite having little connection or relationship to Peter.

Actually Jess’s title selling better than Gwen despite being an objectively obscurer character than the latter does showcase that again synergy does not automatically transfer to sales.

It also means Marvel has really bungled Gwen since she used to sell pretty big when she first came out.

Spider-Woman should have closer ties to Spider-Man. I hate that they have kept them apart so long.

And yes, if I have to choose I'd choose Jessica over Gwen and I love Spider-Gwen.

Too bad her recent series sucked so bad.

Why should they be more closely connected? Despite the similar names, their origins aren’t remotely connected

[up][up] That's kind of the by-product where even going back to her origin, Jessica was only ever loosely affiliated to Peter and that's being kind.

It wasn't until the original Spider-Verse comic that they tried to kind of brute force her into being part of Peter's "Superhero Family."
