Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Hot take, but Hogboblin Roderick Kingsley really should be Miles's archenemy.

Why?

Well the Goblin and Spider dynamic is always fun.

But seriously, they are both successors to a Spider/Goblin, both assuming the mantle when they thought the original died, (like that stuck.) Heck, Roderick is even franchising identities for supervillains. Both have this sort of need to prove themselves worthy and have a bit of a problem being stuck in the shadows of their predecessor, albeit moreso in Kingsley's case rather than Miles.

There's more, give me a bit.

EDIT: If not arch-enemy, then at least a more recurring foe. There's a lot of untapped potential I see.

If any Hobgoblin is going to be a Miles enemy, Phil Urich makes the most sense.

Not that I agree Miles needs to have a Goblin arch nemesis just because he’s a Spider. It’s kind of like expecting everyone in the bat family to have expies of the Joker as enemies instead of their individual casts.

Also, Hobgoblin isn’t really a “successor” to the Green Goblin’s legacy. He’s more or less his own separate thing.

From what I recall, the Hobgoblin was the major villain in Hopeless' Spider-Woman series. Not sure whether there's a history there.

Although he's currently dead AFAIK, the Phil Urich Goblin would be a good Miles villain, because the whole impetus for Urich's character is basically "a slightly shadier Peter Parker wearing the costume of Peter's worst enemy". Which is probably why it was inevitable that writers would give him a Face–Heel Turn.

And in light of Spider-Verse, an evil Peter B. Parker would be a good choice. And who knows, maybe Phil could be reworked into a heroic character again?

Hobgoblin was in Bendis's last Miles storyline, but he was portrayed as a whiny loser who I don't think even fought Miles at any point.

Ah Bendis. Has such a hard time getting characters right.

I’m reminded of when he had Catman drawn as a crying baby in Superman.

It’s very very obvious when Bendis doesn’t care for a character or plot point. Insultingly obvious.

And in light of Spider-Verse, an evil Peter B. Parker would be a good choice. And who knows, maybe Phil could be reworked into a heroic character again?

In terms of Spider-Verse, I’ve actually seen a few people suggest that the next movie might be a loose Superior Spider-Man adaptation with Peter B, actually.

Some people in the Spider-Verse thread suggested using one of the other evil Spider-Man instead, but a lot of them seemed rather one-note in comparison.

Also, I really like the idea of using the “Let’s do this one last time” monologue from the first movie, only to watch it go off the rails, as we realize, this is not the Peter B that we know. It’s just such a fun way to reuse a previously narrative device, while at the same time, pulling the rug out from under the audience.

He also suggested using Mysterio (based off the comics version, not the one from FFH), as the main villain, which I also like the idea of. He’s a good villain for this type of multiverse story (like in the first “Spider-Men”), and you could do some really fun and trippy things with his illusions in this Animation style.

Huh so there is another version of him.

Robert Kingslay, the loser counterpart of Robert Kingsley.

Well he had a loser twin brother, only a matter of time before he got a loser alternate counterpart.

Who's body has Carlie identified?

More info on Miles' Clone Saga.

Though I'm interested that this is going to be the very first arc that Peter is going to play a role in Saladin's run. Outside of popping in to wishing him Happy Birthday a while back he hasn't really appeared.

And for what it's worth, I'm sure they'll play the "did the 'real' Miles actually get freed from Assessor's lab" card back in the original arc, but I'm sure Saladin is self-aware enough to not and try to commit to it like Marvel did with Ben Reilly during the original Clone Saga.

Okay, question for those reading Amazing: When did Harry appear beforehand in Spencer's run? I know he was revealed as Kindred but I'm wondering how well the foreshadowing was handled.

Does anyone else feel like Spencer's conflating "One more day was a bad storyline" with "One more day was a terrible horrible sin?" Like, the only person who has a reason to be offended by OMD was MJ, and she kinda sorta is responsible for the deal.

The story's bad from an editorial perspective, but Harry being brought back to life isn't a bad thing or Peter's fault, and it feels like they're pinning that on him.

I feel like OMD getting retconned needed to be done in a way that wasn't this, basically, and the fact that it's taking so long to get there doesn't help.

I mean, it happens in comics a lot.

If you're going to address it in-universe you have to yell at someone.

Like how Avengers #200 was a nonsense travesty with the characters acting bafflingly but you can't have Carol yell at Jim Shooter, George Perez, Bob Layton, and David Michelinie so she tore the Avengers a new one and told them to do better.

Well, you could have Carol yell at the creative staff actually. Marvel comics exists in universe and the creative teams usually exist in universe too. The Watcher once yoinked John Byrne up from the marvel offices to deliver him to the space trial of Reed Richards so he could write it up for the FF comic.

It wouldn't have the intended tone though.

And, alas, I think Marvel has eased off on that meta conceit anyway.

[up] that’s kinda the issue with trying to deal with bad writing in-universe. Someone has to be held accountable for whatever poor decisions were foisted on them (making a deal with the devil, how the avengers treated Carol in Avengers #200, etc), and if it can't be the writers themselves, it has to be the characters. (I suppose you could also just have the characters yell at the writers, but that kinda defeats the purpose.)

Also, Avengers Annual #10 is a great comic.

Carol literally slaps Thor in the face.

[up][up][up] I don't know, I'd say it's very much Peter (and MJ's) fault. You can argue that they had no way of knowing things would backfire in this exact way, but they should have absolutely expected that there would be unintended negative consequences when they opted to make a deal with Mephisto.

NOMUUUUUUUURAAAAAAAA!!! >:(
