Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Namor actually did have a long-term girlfriend — Betty Dean. She was actually the one to convince Namor to join the Allies and fight against the Nazis in World War II. In fact, the most recent Marvel Snapshots: Sub-Mariner one-shot was from her perspective and it was a good story.

I recently read an old Namor story (referenced on his page on this very wiki) where Namor was throwing down with Thing over the Helmet of Power (the disguised Serpent Crown) and he gets caught up in his bloodlust and threatens to kill the thing only for an old woman to walk right up to him and tell him to stop.

Namor just freezes like he's seen a ghost and actually calms down, doing exactly what she'd asked. He wants to talk with her, but she says there isn't much left to say and leaves, and so does he. Thing wakes up, and is left to wonder how he won a fight where he got his ass knocked out.

We later find out this lady was Betty. Take note this is back in the 70's where her being alive comes off as believable. She's obviously long dead by now.

Betty Dean seemed like she always had incredbile courage, just walking up to Namor during one of his rampages, and telling his ass to sit the fuck down again and again.

Ah, yes, Betty was one of the best parts of the old Namor stories. I mean, there was a plot with second moon aliens, why wouldn’t you love that?

Image of Namor getting to the second moon.

[up] Which story? What comic and what issue?

That would be Issue 8 of Prince Namor: The Submariner. I don't know the volume though.

Linkara reviewed the Champions arc where Miles Morales dealt with Mephisto for Atop The 4th Wall, he thought it was pretty good. It's nice to see him touching Spider-Man comics that aren't Clone Saga issues, and since he isn't dealing with Peter Parker, he gets to stick to his vow not to read post-OMD titles with the character until it's retconned. I hope he does delve into Spencer's run if it proves to be what undoes it.

....He really hasn't read any Spiderman comics since 2005/2006 then?

That....is a long ass time to not know what's going on in comics. That's...

...well you can call it discipline to stick to a vow...or something else. It depends on how you see it.

As long as OMD persists on people's minds, I doubt one can enjoy a Spider-Man comic without it feeling...tainted somehow. Guess for some, previous behavior looms more than for others.

Wonder if people felt like that post Clone Saga and the missing baby.

It's a rare comic where the villain complete and utterly wins and gets the hero to totally destroy his value system for his elderly aunt who wanted to die anyway and leads to the magical abortion of his daughter and dissolution of his marriage. It's horrifying honestly.

Edit: Ah right yeah that baby. Has that never been resolved ? Really ?

The baby Norman Osborn stole during the Clone Saga hasn't been resolved yet either.

Although she retroactively probably never existed due to OMD. Huh. I guess Mayday can be an Exile now.

Linkara brought up that there should be a "Mephisto vs. All Spider-Man" crossover and I think it honestly looks like there will be. Not only did Peter and Miles make a deal with Mephisto, but so did Otto when he was the Superior Spider-Man, and Mephisto has shown that he loves making all Spider-Man miserable. Plus, we still need to to figure out what "the Fate of Mephisto" is from the last issue of History of the Marvel Universe.

I only wonder if this will happen before or after whatever master plan Mephisto is planning over Avengers way. Or maybe same time.

The "really edgy one"? Which one is that?

I don't think Spider-Woman nor Spider-Gwen have made deals with Mephisto either.

[up] It might be tied in with that, actually. After Empyre, the next crossover might be Mephisto related.

Yeah, as a kid who read OMD fresh, 616 Spidey feels tainted.

The fact they kept sins past canon is still baffling when stories like Kraven's last hunt are affected by OMD.

Kraven's Last Hunt wasn't affected by OMD. Kraven was just later resurrected by his family.

no jess and gwen havent made deals with mephisto either but shed make the deal with her own mephisto anyway. but peter, miles, ben, and otto all made deals. the only main male spiders who havent are kaine and miguel, and miguel was in another universe like gwen was.

[up][up] I meant like the marriage was an emotional core of that story, like Spidey was able to dig his way out of his grave because he didn't want to leave Mary Jane alone so soon after being married among other things.

So OMD retconning the marriage so that they just lived together for a bit just makes the story weaker in-universe.

As i discussed a while back, Post OMD stories feel that Peter is trapped in a horrible alternate universe. Spencer's run while great, i still can't shake that feeling off.

[up] My headcanon figures Mephisto probably wanted Peter's daughter erased because she'd end up being the pattern maker or something, but the Renew Your Vows version of Annie wound up becoming that person anyway, and as a result the RYV Peter and MJ essentially became the most important Spider-Characters in the canon, the same could be said for Mayday's dad, who's been the new host of The Other since 2018 (although we haven't seen him since he burst out of his grave)

There's so many more interesting versions of Peter out there, and we're kind of still stuck with the one who can't learn his lesson, and looks generally weaker in terms of progression.

Sure teen Peter has his moments, but Adult Spidey is where it's at.

Honestly, Renew your vows feels the most Peter to me. And that was written by Dan Slott. Who also had him kill Eddie Brock.

Linkara reviewed the Champions arc where Miles Morales dealt with Mephisto for Atop The 4th Wall, he thought it was pretty good.

I appreciate that he pointed out the difference between the two cases too.

So i'm guessing his issue is with Peter related books.

I don't think Spider-Woman nor Spider-Gwen have made deals with Mephisto either.

Not that he can make a deal with Gwen going by what he said to Otto in the recent Superior Spider-Man book or anyone not from 616.

I do wonder what Earth-65 Mephisto is like.

[up] Thinking about the Otto deal still makes me so mad.

As i discussed a while back, Post OMD stories feel that Peter is trapped in a horrible alternate universe. Spencer's run while great, i still can't shake that feeling off.

Given that he was ready to propose in #29, and another demon-thing seems deadset on preventing that, I feel like this is going to get addressed soon enough.
