Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

The last spider man life story finally hit unlimited so I finally read it and ehh it doesn’t really stick the landing

Compared to the other installments that were based on decades further back it just feels empty and half formed

I don't know, I loved it. It contained the important stuff that happened to Spider-Man in the 2010s — Miles Morales and the Superior Spider-Man stuff especially.

Yeah I like the sendoff bit but the rest of the issue doesn't land.

Miles gets screwed over because its secretly Otto the whole time and when its not Miles is so traumatized and angry over what happened that he's not really like Miles at all. Its "Miles exists" and nothing else about him. And the Superior Spider-Man stuff is lessened by having it happen to someone else.

Plus the cultural context of the decade just isn't there I feel. The other issues did great stuff with the decades they took place in and this one was maybe too close to it for that same insight.

And I know that the 10 year or so time skips is going to have stuff fall by the wayside but Peter's longstanding animosity toward Tony Stark comes to nothing because Tony disappears off-panel between issues when DOOM takes over the world. Kravenom has been lurking for several issues now and when he finally shows back up its an anticlimax. And the Doom stuff doesn't get any room to really be dwelt on so it lacks impact as well.

So yeah just overall my perception is that this issue is kind of the weak link of the series.

I will admit that Chip Zdarsky's final issue of Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man is way better.

Speaking of life story I wonder what happened to the Gwen Stacy clone, she wasn't with Ben Reilly when he reappeared.

"getting time consuming game overs" I mean, that sounds like a you problem. Git gud and so forth. Jokes aside, PS 4 MJ was pretty cool, just because she was able to contribute to the story. I haven't played the game, but I watched a Let's Play, and the stealth missions for MJ and Miles did seem pretty annoying to play. But that's an issue with gameplay mechanics, not the character.

I didn't like that it made MJ a reporter.

Like, holy shit, oh my God, no more reporter significant others for superheroes. Stop it, no more, never again. The blood has been squeezed from the stone, it's done, there's no new angle, there's nothing different you could possibly do. Stop it, stop it, stop it.

Well just having different personalities should be something different.

Mary Jane is a different character from Lois Lane even though they rhyme and its not just occupation.

[up] Speaking of Life story, i'm shocked that they spared Peter's son, guess Chip realized he went too far.

Regardless, 2010 could have been better. Maybe not a grand mission like the space station, but something more personal and down to earth would have sufficed.

Its weird because his kids are in 2010 so little that Chip being alive or dead wouldn't have mattered at all except to change who said one line of dialogue.

I’m still bothered that Sue left Reed for Namor of all people.

Like I can understand leaving Reed but for Namor?! C’mon Sue don’t you have any self-respect for yourself?

That would be somewhat of an improvement.

Namor is basically like Marvel Charlie Harper.

Sue leaving Reed for Doom would be weird and out of character but would set up the last chapter slightly better.

What I love about the Morlun issue in Life Story is how he's killed by the Parker kids, it's a direct Take That! to Slott's Spider-Verse where they made a big song and dance over how 616 Peter was supposed to have been the only one to have ever survived an Inheritor attack.

Its incredible despite all that Doom is still a loads better romantic party than Namor.

There are very few people in the entire MU who are worse than Namor.

I mean, I give Namor a lot of crap for his lack of respect for the sanctity of marriage or other people's boundaries but I don't recall him mistreating any of the women he has been involved with.
