Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up][up][up] "The Lizard's Tale" by Paul Jenkins, one of the few black spots on his otherwise good Spidey run. It's been more or less ignored, though in that one Slott(?) story where the people of Horizon Labs were turned into lizards it was speculated that the reason why they didn't seem as malevolent as the Lizard is because they lacked Connors's subconscious misanthropy caused by things like war-related PTSD, the loss of his arm, etc.

[up][up] The symbiotes are ashamed of their past and origins, and are trying to repent for them while simultaneously covering them up with the "Agents of the Cosmos" story.

Well, it doesn't exactly contradict what Old Galactus said about the Necrosword being "carved the first dawn from the stone of the endless night".

Christopher Gage interview about Spider-Geddon

Big takeaway from it is that it'll be more of an ensemble story compared to how "Peter-centric" Spider-Verse was.

Renew Your Vows

Interesting twist with Annie finding out her "clone" isn't one after all, so how was it able to trigger her spider-vision and give her migranes? MJ's more suspicious of Annie's headaches (Annie hasn't told her parents about her visions for years), the Parker family discover from Normie that Sinister is leading an attack on the X-Mansion with an army of Spider-Freaks!

Amazing Spider-Man

Sure enough, it's the iso genome generator that split Peter and Spidey in two. They discuss the matter on a rooftop, Spidey goes off to do his superhero thing while Peter goes through the next day doing everyday chores and hanging out with MJ, Randy and Nora at the bowling alley. Peter ignores a call for help when the Tri-Sentinel attacks. Peter later goes back to ESU where he meets with Curt. Curt reveals he's been testing the generator on two mice and split them in two, but while one is very energetic and has boundless amounts of strength and persistence, the other mouse is more reserved and quiet. Connors reveals that one half is brash and bold and the other is contemplative and reserved. Peter realises he's been split into his powerful side and his responsible side. Spidey in the meantime battles the Tri-Sentinel and makes his way into his control unit, where he plays around with the wiring and sends it crashing into the street, he treats the experience like a cowboy at a rodeo!

There is a possible way Spencer could catch fire with this

I think the normal/moral/responsible Peter is going to die, and the wreckless/action focused/carefree Spider-Man is going to live and thus the franchise is given a "reset" where he has to work hard at juggling a relationship, an education and a job with none of the focus he used to have, and it'll be a real test of MJ's love and tolerance

... Okay. That's pretty weird. Really thought it was just going to be Boomerang impersonating Peter and/or Spidey using the Chameleon's gear. That would make so much more sense.

[up][up]I actually think it's gonna be the opposite. Peter will be shown to be the better man and spider-man will ultimately be useless without his morals even with his powers

So interesting twitter chain, but coming out of Miles' annual that came out of yesterday and his appearances over in Venom, looks like his backstory is going to get retooled now that Bendis is no longer around to dictate that "everything in the Ultimtate Universe is still canon."

They're going the OMD-retcon route of the core story beats from the Ultimate Universe (His Uncle Aaron, his mom's encounter with Venom) still happened, only now in the 616 universe.

[up][up],[up] His current crossover with Venom implies that his mom now was only "hurt" by Venom.

I know Bendis' intention was always to keep the Ultimate Universe canon, but there was always some logical inconsistencies with it, like how the how was his mom revived, how everyone else forgot about it, how his entire school made the switch between dimensions.

Bendis, by his own admission, didn't want to address any of it outside of "it's canon" so now that he's no longer around, you got the new creative team sorting through it. Which I approve of since Miles is kind of a continuity mess. It's like the first thing that constantly comes up when discussing him lol

Problem is, the original origin story of Miles Morales was an interesting one. The new origin story... it's just trivial and uninspired, too similar to Peter's origin story, and it even makes less sense. Peter was right to angst over the death of Uncle Ben, you already know the story, or the death of Gwen Stacy, who was attacked by a villain by proxy and wouldn't have died if Peter wasn't Spider-Man. But Miles has little reason to feel so guilty over the death of this guy: it was a random supervillain attack, and he was trying to protect him, he simply was not good enough.

In any case, this is the main problem. Miles Morales was created in an alternate universe, with a context of its own, and Bendis took full advantage of that, making a wild and creative new take on the Spider-Man mythos. The stories narrated there were firmly rooted in that universe, and could not be made in the main one. And yet, they transplanted him there, and placed him under the constraints of continuity... and not even the author could make him right. And now, they even deprived him of his origin. Now, there's nothing really interesting or compelling about Miles Morales. Now, he's just powers and a suit, one of countless spider-themed super heroes around. What is special about him, now? What sets him apart from Ben Reilly, Anya Corazon, Silk, the "Renew your vows" family and so many others?

I can forsee that the all-new Miles Morales will be a complete failure. And, at some point, they will have to do with him what DC did with Power Girl during Infinite Crisis.

[up]X7, yeah no one liked the Starfish one. Their loss, that book is legitimately hilarious and a brilliant dissertation on Rachel's character.

Sucks that apparently the origin got changed. While I'm glad a black writer wrote this issue and they'll probably try to find a black writer for a new ongoing, Bendis just knew the character inside in and out. Tying a death to the origin; I can't really behind. Miles's whole deal was him overcoming his Bystander Syndrome and then having almost everything about being Spider-Man practically forcing him to hang it up and still doing it anyway mostly due to his altruism.

So, not a follower of comics over here, just giving things a read from time to time, but damn, I quite liked what they pulled out with Peter temporally bonding with the Venom symbiote in the Go Down Swinging storyline. Specially the unbonding being pretty much "I've got this, trust me, and don't get hurt", and how, when Spidey went Venom, one can't quite get which one of them was angrier. Good going there.

Newspaper hijinx ROFL, first.Golden Claw didn't want Peter killed because he was married to Broadway star MJ, then that motivation changed to keeping Peter alive until he got information from him regarding Spider-Man and Iron Fist's involvement in thwarting the attack on Jimmy Wuu, just as he was going to kill Peter, Fisk enters and says he can't allow Peter to be killed because...he's married to Broadway celebrity MJ and the attention it'd get would interfere in their plans!
