It's an interesting line of discussion but ultimately answered by Bellisario's Maxim, you need to have little compassion for the monsters that are being killed so they established the "replaced their soul with a demon" aspect. But making them Always Chaotic Evil leaves little room for anything but Generic Doomsday Villain like The Master or Faux Affably Evil like Angelus, you can't have complexity with the standards previously set otherwise you open up a moral question of vampire rehabilitation. It's a similar question of the spell to ensoul a vampire, some vampires might take a page from Angel and become good guys but having a soul doesn't make you innately moral.

[up] That is a good point. Even Angel had to learn how to be moral and not evil when he got his soul.

I mean. Liam was a twat before he became a vampire. So him naturally being a twat after getting a soul makes sense.

Passion of the Nerd does an analysis of that episode from Season 4.

While dreams are weird, I'm going to argue that there was way too much foreshadowing going on in this episode.

I don't think the worldbuilding was ever absolute on Buffy. However, I think Joss said something that did stick with me, "Vampires are drawn to evil the way humans are [theoretically] drawn to good." Which means that there would be vampires who suck [pun intended] at being evil."

I've been hearing about the shit Joss used to do back in the day.

So basically, he's scum.

Oh well.

....for some reason, I still like AOU, but I'm not defending him anymore.

[up] (2) Vampires are drawn to evil. That's just mythical-sounding enough to fit any premise, I like it.

I think I'm gonna like AOU a lot more after having seen WandaVision.

But yeah. Disappointing, but I guess not that surprising at this point. The hypocrisy of it rankles.

This fan-made intro for the show's villains makes me wish we got to see them all interact.

There's got to be a fanfic somewhere with some kind of cross-over idea where the villains met each other, somewhere down the road in the series' timeline.

Spike at least got to meet quite a few of the villains, I think.

This fanfic has the various villains (The Master, the Mayor, Drusilla, Caleb, Adam, Glory and Warren) meet up in hell and talk about how much they hate Buffy.

Well, if you count the (re-)introduction to the First Evil in Season 7... That's not really the Spike you want, though. And they don't really get to interact with *each other*.

Wish they could've kept it up with that gimmick, though. That would've been fun.

I haven't seriously thought about Buffy in years.

Where the fuck is a bluray set? This is one of the most important TV shows of its kind and era. I was looking for a BR release a decade ago and still nothing.

I wanted to rewatch the whole series, see how it holds up. I haven't watched Season 1 since I saw it on TV a billion years ago. It's kinda funny, not even Buffy fans like S1. Me and every podcaster or poster I've read/listened to agree it was pretty shit. Yet that shit is why we got Season 2, 3 and 5 and obviously something about that shit drew us in because I sure as hell watched every ep and tuned in for S2 and 3 until I was too young to continue watching this TV-14 show and had to wait until reruns on FX years later.

But yeah, weird to think about. I guess some Trek fans think TOS was shit in retrospect, too.

So I brought up elsewhere how Buffy transcends the flaws of its creator, just like most works of art. It does not matter if Whedon was revealed to be an ax murderer, he was not the only person who worked on Buffy and is not solely responsible for why people loved it in the past, present or future. Plus, at this point, Buffy has influenced all forms of popular media.

But I wanted to try to quantify that legacy. I know Buffy has influenced stuff but just how influential is it?

A quick Google revealed this fascinating article from The Atlantic: The Rise of Buffy Studies

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer by a mile. More than twice as many papers, essays, and books have been devoted to the vampire drama than any of our other choices—so many that we stopped counting when we hit 200."

It beat out The Matrix, the Alien franchise or Simpsons.

While this is all very cool, I was also looking for more direct influences. Like, say, Dragon Age: Origins was influenced by Buffy as the writers acknowledged.

I was curious what you all might know?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer gets a YA sequel trilogy from Disney Books

The official synopsis is as follows:

Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers—including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi—might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born. But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next. Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!

I went and looked up the author, and the premises of their other works seem reasonably decent. She has won some awards, hit bestseller lists, and some of her stuff has live adaptations theoretically in the works. As such, I am going to assume that she is not the barely competent hack that the description implies and that (as is common for licensed works) someone at Disney said "Here is the setup and characters you are going to use. Take it or leave it".

Not that I have any real interest in reading it either way.

I'd prefer a beat em up instead of a fighting game.

Man, a side-scrolling beatemup would've hit just right. The 3D stuff just never quite got there.

But it could work. Might need some imagination to keep each character distinct. Reserve some of the bigger bads for boss fights. Rope in some of Angel's cast to round out the general roster. I'd have loved that. Buffy and Faith and Angel and Spike as the respective Ryu and Kens of the thing. Maybe have Willow, Xander, and Giles as a single fighter called The Scoobies squaring off against the Trio, latter-day Wesley shootdodging with dual pistols, Adam's arm transforming into a giant gun a la Cable in MVC 2, Glorificus battling Illyria. Special dialogue for each pairing. I could see it.

[up] Huh?

[up][up] Part of the inspiration from this idea was imagining a tag combo animation with Angel and Spike or Buffy and Faith based on Goku and Frieza's Dramatic Finisher from FighterZ.

Well, not so much the part where they drive a guy through a meteor but the contemptuous dialogue during the animation.
