Just for once, I wish people would go and make an original movie instead of another bloody sequel

So, new director, that could be good news, although I haven't seen anything he's directed, and with a little luck, it isn't as atrociously written as At World's End, which would definitely be good. The trailer, though... Allow me to sum it up for you: *ahem* "JACK SPARROW, JACK SPARROW, JACK SPARROW, YOU GUYS. LOOK, MORE JACK SPARROW, YAY." Not that a little Johnny Depp is a bad thing, but... well, water's good too, and you can drown in it, or get poisoned by it, funnily enough.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the new director, sine he did Chicago and I absolutely thought that was an excellent film. It's the fourth movie in the series, though, and I'm not feeling to good about it from what I have seen.

It does sound like it's a completely new story, though, rather than yet another continuation of the Black Pearl/Elizabeth Swann/Will/Flying Dutchman thing. That's one point in its favor with me. Captain Jack Sparrow is a broadly enough drawn character that he could support a whole "legendary escapades" thing, like Zorro or The Saint or James Bond.

Personally, I'm very very excited for this film. They're taking everything that was great about the Pirates series (specifically Barbossa and Jack) and removing everything that was bad from it (Will and Elizabeth). Plus it's a Buddy Picture and I can already imagine all of the hilarious hijinks that would ensue.

Just another tired franchise getting another sequel so the studio can milk it dry. Also, I'm getting sick of hearing Hans Zimmer scores during every single movie now (I get tired of hearing "He's A Pirate" all the time especially since Bruckheimer rejected an Alan Silvestri score in the demo stage that probably would have fit the film a lot better than Zimmer/Badelt's scores did).

I really wish this was a non-Pirates of the Caribbean film (but instead a throwback to older pirate movies like The Sea Hawk, Nate and Hayes and Roman Polanski's Pirates). But alas...

Is it just me or does it appear from the new trailer that Barbosa has a peg leg now?

Also more Keith Richards, NO DO NOT WANT!!! He was a funny cameo but that was all he needed to be A CAMEO!

Considering that he only appears in one brief scene in the trailer and doesn't seem to be involved in the overall action, I'd go out on a limb and say he's a cameo here too.

@OP: I believe this movie this movie has been planned for quite a while, so it's not like someone said "we need a quick cash! Oh wait, those pirate movies a couple years ago did great let's tack something on!"

In fact, we might even have a topic for this already, I know it was discussed for a bit in the general Po TC thread.

You know, this series has let me down two times too many, and while I enjoyed the first film quite a bit I can't see Jack as anything but a humorous side character, with no real depth to him, and I have no doubt that this installment will be little more than rampant fanservice, so I must voice that I will neither gamble my money nor my time to watc—ROCKET POWERED PIRATE SHIP!

Okay, maybe I'll see it.

I would say if you don't like the series, this doesn't look like it'll change your mind.

That said...it feels, to me, like a true sequel based on the trailer.

Same world, SOME of the same characters, but a brand new adventure. Less "Hey, let's make the movie again," and more "The next adventure in the life of [Character]!"

Basically. It's because of this that I really like the idea. I was excited when I first heard about it last year, and I'm still excited about it.

We haven't really had a film series where a character has adventures that isn't tied to a set arc in my lifetime. Most films these days are designed to rise and fall, and the characters designed not to have their stories end when the films do, or, at least, designed to have the rest of the characters' lives be only in the viewers' imagination.

We haven't had, you know, just a series where it's a character getting into different stories, finding new adventures, all that jazz. Reminds me of concept behind the old Sindbad movies, I suppose.

^ Like that, yeah. Every movie or couple movies is a new adventure for Cap'n Jack Sparrow.

I'm really glad they decided to leave Will and Elizabeth alone. Their story is finished as of At World's End.

I wouldn't mind a cameo by Will, though. I mean, he is kinda the keeper of the dead, right? If Sparrow does something that leaves a lot of bodies in his wake...

If Jack Sparrow wants to live forever, why doesn't he just try to find some way to bribe Will into letting him go when his time comes?
