I was going to suggest that they're just being shadowed by the ball of fire...then I realized that I don't think I've seen him without glasses before.

Little convenient that 2/3 of the birds present are radical free-thinkers skeptical of conventional wisdom and recorded history. This particular bout of exposition feels like shotgunning a plot synopsis for an entire political intrigue novel directly at the audience, using characters as mouthpieces.

If I remember right, the original reason the meeting was that the griffins had some information to share about how to get rid of the excess energy. Then events happened that the group thought the griffins should know. I think that is how it went.
