- And You Thought It Would Fail: Alexander Mackendrick was unhappy with the film; as the cast and crew were preparing to return to London, he told Gordon Jackson that the film would "probably turn out to be a dull documentary on island life".
- Michael Balcon disliked the completed rough cut—mostly put together from the rushes—and his initial thought was to cut its running time down to an hour and classify it as a second feature.
- Applicability: Part of the film's appeal to British audiences in the late 1940s was that wartime rationing was still in place and times were very austere. The film's flaunting attitude towards authority obviously struck a chord.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The film surprised many at Ealing Studios for the level of popularity it gained in the US, where it became Ealing's first to achieve box office success.
- Retroactive Recognition: Dr. Maclaren is played by James Robertson Justice, who would later be best known for playing Sir Lancelot Spratt in the Doctor... Series.
- Sequel Displacement: The original novel, published in 1947, was in fact a sequel to an earlier Compton Mackenzie novel, Keep the Home Guard Turning (1943), which had the same setting and some of the same characters.
