- Broken Base: Possibly one of the most extreme examples in Gothic Metal, with any discussion of them on the Internet usually getting derailed by Vibeke vs. Mariangela and Morten-era vs. Post-Morten-era arguments, up to and including the band's disbandment announcement, which featured multiple comments saying things along the lines of "Eh, Tristania died when Vibeke left, this is just making it official".
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The band has had more commercial success in Germany and France than in their home country of Norway.
- In Name Only: Although two original members are left, many people felt this way with many of the key members leaving, particularly Vibeke Stene and Morten Veland.
- Replacement Scrappy: Mariangela Demurtas, particularly when she first joined.
- Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Mariangela Demurtas became much more popular when Darkest White was released.
- Signature Song: "Equilibrium" for the Vibeke era, "Year of the Rat" for the Mariangela era.
