YMMV / Torchwood S1 E5 "Small Worlds"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Are the Fairies evil demonic things who kill people For the Evulz and only care about a few humans, or are they misguided, eternal children who can't understand that what they're doing is wrong and only kill to protect their chosen ones? The episode has evidence for both interpretations.
  • Genius Bonus: The faeries quote W.B. Yeats' poem The Stolen Child in their entreaties to get Jasmine to go with them, as well as at the end of the episode.
    Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand.
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: This episode displays the effects and consequences of Jack making a difficult sacrifice (a child) to prevent planet Earth from a deadly form of misfortune. Three series later and Jack has to make the same sacrifice, except it ends much, much worse on a personal level: he had to murder his 10-year-old grandson Steven, to drive away the 456, an alien force that wants to take 10% of the Earth's children to use as living narcotics.
  • Narm: While the fairies are creepy enough, when they attack and touch humans, the CGI is...not fantastic.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Jasmine's mother comes off as this. While she is shown to love her daughter and care about her, she doesn't try to understand her nearly as much as she could, and she does nothing about her boyfriend being an abusive jerk to Jasmine.
