YMMV / The Traitors (US)

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Kate was definitely this. Some people found her jabs at other players and her over-it attitude to be absolutely hilarious, while others found her to be obnoxious and annoying. This only intensifies after season 1's barrel-rolling challenge, where she intentionally throws away barrels, causing the team to lose money, and openly tries to get herself voted off the show - some see this as a highlight of the season, while others were left wishing she would just quit the game already.
    • Dan in season 2, mainly due to his disastrous run as a traitor. Some viewers - particularly those who were already fans from his Big Brother days, enjoyed watching him even if he wasn't that successful. Others were irritated by how poorly he played, especially after he turned on his fellow traitor Phaedra right before he left, which effectively doomed her game while failing to save his. Given that fellow Traitor Parvati was also under suspicion, this moment all but guaranteed a win for the Faithfuls.
    • Peter was definitely this in season 2. Some fans respected his dedication to taking down the Traitors, and thought his plan to lie about having the shield to try to trick the Traitors into targeting the real shield holders note , which helped to expose Dan and Parvati as Traitors, was brilliant. Others found him to be annoyingly self-righteous about his Faithfulness and often hypocritical due to his attempts to make deals with people he suspected to be Traitors. Likewise, detractors also point out that the lie about the shields wasn't quite as brilliant as it seemed, as it put a massive target on Peter's back that made it nearly impossible for him to get to the end without being banished or murdered.
    • The rest of the Peter Pals note  were divisive for many of the same reasons as Peter himself, albeit to a lesser extent. Some thought they were smart players and were cheering for them to take down the Traitors, others disliked when they intentionally shut other people out of conversations and hoped for them to be taken down a few pegs.
  • Broken Base: Fans who came to the show from its UK counterpart tend to be divided on whether or not they like the US's version's use of established reality stars. Detractors argue that using non-famous cast members heightens the player's investment and the intensity of the game as they generally need the prize money more than the celebrities do, and also point out that the established reputations of celebrities from their other shows can make it easier to figure out who the potential Traitors are. Others enjoy the celebrity casting, mainly as a chance to see their favorite reality stars again in a new setting.
  • Epileptic Trees: The shocking ending of season 2 led to some of these among fans. A few have speculated that Trishelle's vote for CT at the final 3 wasn't because she believed he was a Traitor, but rather intentionally done to cause a 1v1v1 split, and that the plan was always to take out MJ on the revote in the endnote .
  • Questionable Casting:
    • Given that the cast primarily consists of reality TV stars, boxer Deontay Wilder and politician John Bercow were very odd inclusions in the season 2 cast, given that neither had any previous reality TV experience.
    • To a lesser extent, this also applies to Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte in season 1 and college basketball player Marcus Jordan in season 2, though both at least had some experience with reality TV even if it wasn't necessarily their main claim to fame.
