YMMV / The Simpsons S2 E17 "Old Money"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The conclusion of this episode, with Grampa Simpson using the money to renovate the retirement home becomes a massive case of Happy Ending Override in later episodes, where it is shown the residents being often mistreated. And their situation, unlike in this episode, is always Played for Laughs. Even worse, later instances confirm that the staff confiscate any new perks the residents gain to keep them low-energy and managable.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Lionel Hutz tells Abe that he must spend a night in a Haunted House in order to get the inheritance that Bea gave him, only to quickly add that he's just kidding. A later episode would have the Simpsons be required to spend a night in a Haunted House to get an inheritance that a late family member left them for real...and the experience there turned out to be better than staying at their own house.
  • Narm Charm: When Abe learns about Bea's death, he says "they may say she died of a burst ventricle, but I know she died of a broken heart." With his borderline sobbing tone, even a cheesy line like that becomes tearjerking.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Beatrice could have been a good step-grandmother to Bart and Lisa, and a good step-mother to Homer. Sadly, she passed away in her first appearance.
