YMMV / The Prisoner of Heaven

Go To

  • Ass Pull: Fermín's new background, especially his relationship with the Sempere family, comes across rather clearly as a later addition to the story of The Shadow of the Wind. Not only it had never been even remotely hinted, it cannot be easily fit into his previous characterization, in which he sticked with them solely out of gratitude for getting him out of the streets.
  • Sequelitis: The book is often considered the worst of the tetralogy, being heavily dependant of the previous two (it was the first without an independent story) and at the same time butchering their continuity left and right in order to open the door for a fourth. The fact that it basically de-canonized the entire The Angel's Game in the process also gained few fans among people who liked that book.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: It's easy to feel this with Fermín's revelations, as they retroactively undo the powerful moment of him breaking down in tears and telling his story to Daniel in the first book. Now it turns out he was technically lying from start to end.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Fermín goes ballistic on Daniel because the latter beats down the man trying to seduce his wife, an idea that Fermín himself gave him by stating what he would do in his place. By this point of the story, Fermín should know that Daniel looks up to him as a Big Brother Mentor in matters of life, so his reaction to Daniel having done exactly what he told him to do is, aside from baffling, quite hypocritical.
