Nightmare Fuel: Allie trapping the terrorists in the refridgeration tower is scary enough, dooming them to die of hypothermia and/or refrigerator death, but then the terrorists start trying to shoot their way out out of desperation. The very flammable refrigerant ignites and blows up the tower while Allie and his family watch on in horror, and due to the same tower providing air conditioning to the nearby village huts via tubes, the tubes also ignite and absolutely scorch the village, only mitigated slightly by the fact that the village had been abandoned at that point. Allie remarks the day after that the refrigerant that leaked out ended up in the nearby river, rendering it uninhabitable to aquatic wildlife and unsafe for humans to swim in.
The Woobie: The Fox children (especially Charlie and Jerry) who are abused relentlessly by their crazy father, taken far away from society (and the home they were comfortable with), and even picked on by Reverand Spellgood's daughter Emily (who tells Charlie and Jerry that they look disgusting, and inquires them if they're nuts or something when they ask if "America is now in ruins").
