YMMV / The King of Fighters XII

Go To

  • Critical Dissonance: While fan reception was outright hostile, critical reception was a bit more mixed, although both critics and fans had similar issues with the game.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: This game was infamously disowned by almost everyone for several reasons, such as its bare-bones presentation, a few severe glitches, and its paltry roster (especially when compared to the series' other two Dream Match Games, but the game had even fewer characters than the very first installment) excluding several fan-favorite characters such as Mai Shiranui. Most fans thus tell newcomers to skip directly from The King of Fighters XI to The King of Fighters XIII.
  • Never Live It Down: Despite the success of this game's immediate successor, all of the time-consuming and costly labor into making the HD sprites would leave SNK reeling for quite a while until KOF XIV came around and had the company rebooted again, with said HD sprites being dropped entirely after seeing usage in only two games.
  • Sequelitis: XII has the honor of being considered not only the weakest entry in the series, but also one of the worst fighting games in recent memory. Common complaints include a conspicuous lack of content, an online mode that was borderline unplayable before a patch, and a roster that was somehow even smaller than The King of Fighters '94.
