YMMV / The Doobie Brothers

  • Covered Up: "Jesus is Just Alright" was first written by Gospel Music choir leader Art Reynolds and recorded by his group The Art Reynolds Singers in 1966. The Byrds recorded it in 1969 (their then-drummer Gene Parsons had played on the Reynolds session) and had a minor hit with it, before the Doobies had a bigger hit with it in 1973.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: They had a hit with "Long Train Runnin' " in 1973. Two years later, Led Zeppelin released "Trampled Under Foot". While Zeppelin acknowledged Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues" as influences on the song, the first four bars of the verse have basically the same meter as the first four bars of the verse of "Long Train Runnin' ", followed by the line "Talkin' 'bout love", whereas the Doobie song's next line is "Without love". The two songs share chords as well. In turn, "Long Train Runnin'" seems to have been an influence on The Smiths' instrumental "Oscillate Wildly".
