YMMV / The Boys S03 E06: "Herogasm"

Go To

  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: There's been a split in how to interpret Soldier Boy's crack about Bill Cosby and his "strong drinks:"
    • Soldier Boy drank one of Cosby's roofied drinks, but because of his superhuman immune system, it didn't knock him out and he thought it was just a strong drink, not a drugged one.
    • Soldier Boy knew what Cosby was up to but didn't care, which fits his regressive, out-of-touch view of the world.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • A-Train dragging Blue Hawk across the street until he's a bloody mess is this due to Blue Hawk being a massive racist who killed unarmed black people and paralyzed A-Train's brother. A-Train also gets a heart attack and seemingly dies, which can be satisfying due to his murders and general assholery.
    • There's also the fight with Homelander himself as he finally meets his match in Soldier Boy, and the suped-up Butcher and Hughie, as for the first time in his entire life, his Unskilled, but Strong nature is revealed to have its limits as he's slowly overpowered in a three-on-one fight by more skilled fighters and is forced to flee for his life instead, finally doing catastrophic damage to his ego that's been long in the making.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Soldier Boy praising Bill Cosby? Can elicit a few cringe laughter from how out of touch he is. Him casually dropping that Cosby made strong drinks? Darkly and gutbusting-ly hilarious.
  • Fridge Horror: Homelander has been in a perpetual mental breakdown ever since his Humiliation Conga at the end of Season 2. As satisfying as it is to watch Butcher, Hughie and Soldier Boy beat the ever-loving crap out of him, the fact that he survived means he's only going to become worse due to his complacency addiction being threatened once again. Especially since Annie exposed Vought for what it really is.
  • Signature Scene: Homelander's fight with Soldier Boy, Butcher and Hughie is generally seen as the highlight of the episode as it shows Homelander facing genuine opposition for the first time and being forced to retreat in terror.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • When Homelander aims for Hughie during the fight, and Hughie teleports before being hit, the logic would be that the wall and the objects behind Hughie should get hit and destroyed by Homelander's eye beams yet nothing is shown being destroyed, making it quite visibly that it was just CGI.
    • Minor one, but, during Annie's rant online, the live reaction comments are commenting about what she is saying before she says it, such as one comment saying "What happened to Maeve?" just before she says Maeve is missing or dead.
  • Squick: You'd expect a big orgy with superheroes would turn some people on, but on the hand, some viewers and reactors found Herogasm quite disgusting. From Love Sausage's package to Mother's Milk getting blasted by semen, the writers were right to put a disclaimer at the start of the episode.
