YMMV / Survive Block Island

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Ending: A Minecraft based reality show from a company with a fairly infamous history of not producing particularly good ones? Yeah, definitely a strange pitch.
  • Awesome Ego: Both season's villains, Alfredo and Michael, are absolutely adored by viewers for their strong personalities and gameplay, which they repeatedly play up for the cameras.
  • Broken Base:
    • Does the series deserve to be a FIRST Exclusive? For the most part, the Achievement Hunter Minecraft Series has always been available to the public for free, while Survive Block Island has a paywall. Is it acceptable due to the higher production values, or is it needless and just restricts who can watch the show?
    • What content actually gets shown in the episodes has been debated in terms of quality. Seeing as how Rooster Teeth is first and foremost a comedic company, some feel the greater attention to the challenges and social play is expected, and not unlike what another Survivor parodies have done. However, others feel its a bit disappointing the series doesn't pay more time to the inner-team strategy element, wishing they got to see more of the backstabbing and alliance building.
  • Cult Classic: Amongst Rooster Teeth audiences. At release, the series received little in the way of attention as a result of it being a FIRST exclusive and coming so soon after the end of weekly Minecraft let's plays. However, among those who tuned in for it, they found arguably one of the most polished, well-edited series Achievement Hunter had done to date.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Charlotte. Easily seen as the funniest contestant of the season, viewers noted how often she stole the show, even without competing. A good portion of comments on "The Meat Shield" are just discussing how she took their attention away from the challenge since they couldn't stop laughing at her jokes or watching her parkour.
    • Jacob. In spite of his short time in the game, he was regarded as very funny and his absolutely tragic elimination stuck out to many as what hooked them on the show.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Total Drama, as a result of them both being comedic parodies of Survivor. A quick glance through any episode's comments will quickly reveal many comparisons between the two.
  • Growing the Beard: While already very well received, season 2 took everything season 1 did and just multiplied it! This, in combination with what many feel is a stronger cast, lead to the second season feeling a lot stronger on the whole.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: Most fans would agree the biggest issue of the series is the runtime; episodes tend to run the gambit of 30-35 minutes, in spite of Survivor episodes running for nearly 10 minutes longer. This leaves some of the episodes feeling lacking in terms of attention toward certain members of the cast and some of the strategic elements.
  • Questionable Casting: While most people are ultimately fine with who got cast for the seasons, most can't help but wonder why Geoff, easily the biggest Survivor fan from Rooster Teeth, didn't compete as a contestant himself. Some have argued his reduced role in the company and family life likely took away too much time to do it, though it still feels like a weird decision.
    • Whoever decided the teams has a very strange idea of how balancing them works. As has been pointed out, the power gap between teams in both seasons is significant; Red Team utterly rolls Blue Team in season 1, and Team Ice didn't fare much better up against Team Fire. The comments on "Lava Wall" spell this out well in regards to a specific player, Lindsay.
Commenter: "Lindsay is fantastic at the creative elements of Minecraft. Pretending they are competent at really any other aspect of Minecraft, so much so that they were chosen to offset Matt's "expertise"...Was a choice."
  • Rooting for the Empire: With how much of a hilarious wildcard he was, many viewers couldn't help but root for Michael throughout season 2, in spite of him being the main antagonist.
