  • Anticlimax Boss: Nolok cheats in the race against him, yet he still manages to be much easier to beat than many of the regular stages, thanks to Fort Magma's irregularly-shaped roads and Nolok's tendency to fly outside of the road.
  • Awesome Music: Plenty of examples.
  • Dancing Bear: Downplayed. Even though it's known for only using free and open-source software and assets and whatnot, the game has its own merits besides, and it's not what its reputation solely relies on.
  • Game-Breaker: The bouncing ball in 0.8.0. 0.8.1 address this in part by adding the Bubblegum Shield, but it doesn't fully stop it from being one.
  • Good Bad Bugs: Free shortcutting is normally penalized with either your car returning as it fell or you losing a lap to your opponents. However, some shortcuts don't have any kind of penalization.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Nolok threatens to eat GNU unless Tux wins a race against him. Did you lost against him? Well, his winning animation shows him enclosed in a bubble, with several onomatopeias being shown, the implication being that HE'S EATING GNU AS YOU SEE.
  • That One Level: Some of the races are hard to beat because of their time limit and the continuous bombing by the other racers' part.
    • 1on1 Zen Garden. The irregular shape of the level, plus the fact that your opponent keeps a constant (and relatively high) speed across the race means that you NEED to know how and when to skid and when to use Nitro.
    • Blackhill Mansion. It has all the bad features every other track had in past versions (such as extremely intrincate curves, which were useful for hard braking but not now with skidding) and a very dark lighting, preventing you from seeing a banana peel or a nitro tank.
    • In prior versions, any of the Nitro collection levels (XR591, Shifting Sands) in higher difficulty levels. Since, you know, spending a bit is mandatory in order to finish such levels, which require the entire gas tank to be filled. With the advent of skidding, these levels lost some of the difficulty.
    • The original version of Minigolf Madness in 0.8.0 and 0.8.1. It was a track thought for hard braking (in fact, it was introduced circa 0.7.3), with VERY pronounced curves and irregular road shapes, but these were the versions where skidding was introduced, and its inclusion in the game made that particular version of the track a really hard one.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • The skidding technique introduced in 0.8.0, which involved the removal of the hard breaking technique. 0.8.1 fixed this.
    • The switch to a newer and "better" engine post 0.8.1. The new engine Antarctica renders the game unplayablenote  if the game doesn't detect a good video card.
