YMMV / Stryper

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Plenty; examples include To Hell with the Devil and Soldiers Under Command.
  • Dead Horse Genre: If they're not being hated for playing Christian rock, they're being hated for playing glam metal.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Oz Fox is highly regarded for his skills as a guitarist even by non-fans of the band.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Huge in Central and South America. Japanese rock critic Masa Itoh also praised the band in the magazine Burrn!, which led to Stryper outselling a number of secular bands in Japan at some point.
  • Misattributed Song: Anything by any other 80s Christian metal band can and will be mistaken for Stryper.
  • Periphery Demographic: Michael Sweet mentioned in a 2018 interview that they even had atheist and Satanist fans in their ranks, which is greatly ironic given the band's "To hell with the devil" message. Nevertheless they still stand for their message of Christian positivity.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Against the Law, in which the band ditched the yellow and black spandex, strong evangelical lyrics, and the iconic logo and verse. The Christian fanbase called the band out for selling out for more mainstream success.
    • Reborn was also criticized by fans for being more contemporary than past albums.
