YMMV / Steven Universe S3E4 "Barn Mates"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: "Show her my sweet?"
  • Broken Base: Were Steven and Peridot trying too hard to make Lapis feel better when she clearly needed space to recover from her trauma, especially considering that Peridot was directly responsible for said trauma? Or was Lapis being a standoffish jerk by not even giving Peridot a chance?
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: If you feel bad about Lapis smashing Peridot's tape recorder, you need not worry: it's proudly on display in their collection of "meep morps" (read: art pieces) a few shows later, showing that the two of them are already laughing about it.
  • Iron Woobie: For all the crap Peridot gets from Lapis trying to bury the hatchet with her, she still takes it with all the fortitude she can muster. Even when Lapis crushes her tape recorder—her most cherished possession on Earth—Peridot responds not with devastating sadness, but a final, desperate attempt to connect with her. And even when that gets shot down, Peridot calmly respects Lapis's demands for her to go away and does just that.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Interestingly enough, both sides count:
    • Steven is right to call out Lapis for being so callous towards Peridot, who's clearly trying her best to make amends, but considering that Peridot was the one who dragged her back to Earth as a prisoner (which indirectly led to her traumatizing experience of being fused with Jasper), one can hardly blame Lapis for not wanting to be chummy with her so soon.
    • Peridot, meanwhile, is so absolutely desperate to make amends with Lapis that she quickly becomes a pest, especially when some of her presents end up triggering bad memories for Lapis, but her efforts are sincere and it's hard not to feel at least a little bad for her.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Again, both sides count.
    • Lapis is obviously going through a lot as Steven and Peridot try to bond with her, but her dismissiveness towards Peridot's nice gestures, especially when she smashes her beloved tape recorder (which she was giving Lapis as a gift), comes off as ungrateful.
    • On the other hand, Steven and Peridot, despite having the best intentions, quickly become pests when they can't take the hint that Lapis does not want company while she's still recovering from her fight with Jasper.
    • It's also possible to see all of them as equally unsympathetic.
