YMMV / Star Trek: The Next Generation S6E15 "Birthright"

  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: Is having your traditional culture important or is peace? Can the latter ever be good if it comes from a place of power?
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Worf: Is he giving the Klingon youth the same opportunity to explore their heritage he had that was denied to them, or is he a destroying their community out of his own bigotry and belief what a real Klingon should be?
      • Furthermore, because Ba'el does not join the Klingon youths in leaving the camp (because Klingon society would never accept her), Worf effectively consigns her to living out the rest of her life in the camp, without any of her young friends. Oh, and that's after he romances her.
    • The camp commandant thinks he's a good man looking out for the Klingons but he's also erased their native culture.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Worf's storyline is set in motion by an ugly bald alien with prominent ears called Jaglom Shrek.
    • Data won't be the last cybernetic individual on board a Federation starship to dream of black birds.
  • Retroactive Recognition: James Cromwell was not a well-known actor at the time, as you might expect by the fact that he's buried under make-up, but there's no mistaking that voice once you know him.
  • Special Effects Failure: Perhaps due to the different lighting on Deep Space Nine, there is a shot or two where the glue holding Worf's mustaches to his lip is very visible as a shiny spot below the hair.
