YMMV / Star Trek: Deep Space Nine S01E05 "Babel"

  • Genius Bonus: Matter replicators in Star Trek are usually said to be incapable of replicating living tissue, so how can the sabotaged replicator manufacture a virus? Because viruses are not alive.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Odo says, "Rom is an idiot. He couldn't fix a straw if it was bent." Later in the series, Rom turns out to be an excellent engineer.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Given how everything else on the station was breaking down, it's a missed opportunity to explore the often overlooked universal translator. A scene or two could have been devoted to exploring how it works before ruling it out as a red herring. Alternatively, the universal translator could have been the source of the problem instead of the virus, opening up some intriguing story possibilities. Imagine the fear and frustration of aliens from a variety of worlds suddenly unable to work together (maybe Miles and Keiko don’t speak the same language). It would also highlight how, in contrast to the Cardassians (who presumably would all speak the same language), the current administration is very diverse and that brings some big challenges with it.
  • Values Resonance: Quark declaring his bar an "essential business" and refusing to close in the middle of a quarantine, contributing to a much greater spread of the virus, is an almost freakishly on-point satire in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
