  • The episode references the stem cell research controversy, a hot-button issue during the day. Research funding was restricted by the George W. Bush presidency, which Christopher Reeve lobbied against. By the time Barack Obama became president, such restrictions were lifted, and as such is now less of a prominent issue as in 2003.
