• Actor Shipping: Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell are subject to this by a lot of fans, especially since the two of them are good friends in real life as well. Director Claire Scanlon joked in an interview the hardest scene to film was the one where the two meet and argue over the food delivery because of their naturally strong chemistry.
• Catharsis Factor: Duncan tossing his coffee at Rick once Charlie confirms he no longer works for him is very satisfying to watch after seeing Rick be a complete Jerkass during the film.
• Diagnosed by the Audience: Something is up with "Creepy Tim", who gleefully keeps plants in his room knowing they'll die, clearly doesn't understand social cues, and says some Cloud Cuckoo Lander things, but it's never clarified.
• Les Yay: Harper and her roommate Becca, who regularly say "I love you" to each other and kiss each other on the lips. Platonically. Harper's description of Kirsten and Rick has also been interpreted as implying feelings for Kirsten:
  Harper: One is a stunningly beautiful woman with dark hair and a fierceness that's both scary and inspiring. ...The other is a guy.
• Signature Scene: The scene where Harper and Charlie eat pizza on the floor of Charlie's apartment bedroom.
• The Woobie: Both Harper and Charlie are young, ambitious professionals who have been forced to put their entire lives on hold because their bosses force them to work around the clock doing mostly demeaning tasks that have little connection to their career goals. The whole reason they come up with their scheme was just because they wanted to have a break and actually have personal lives.
