  • Jerkass Woobie: Although we never actually see him, Jim Frazer from "The Memory of Water" seems to qualify. He does nothing but poke his nose into everyone's business, repeatedly sending rambling, defamatory letters to the local paper (which, as the editor admits, are all unpublishable) and is therefore a pariah among the entire village. However, he was once very close to his cousin Martin (as revealed by the discovery of the time capsule); he lost out on the family inheritance due to being the son of the younger brother; he clearly has some kind of mental condition which no-one seems to remotely care about; he ends up being brutally murdered when he tries to protect Martin by confronting Martin's wife about the affair she's been having with the handyman. At least the restored Elizabethan garden is dedicated to his memory.
  • Les Yay: In-universe, several people mistake them for a couple, and there's a modest amount of fan fiction, some of which has them getting together, or at least considering it as a possibility.
  • Vacation, Dear Boy: With most of the filming taking place at country estates or Mediterranean villages, it's easy to suspect this was a motivator for acting in the series.
