YMMV / Rodney R Rodney

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The comic is definitely trying to imply that Travis is the serial killer's true identity, but some readers have posited the possibility that, like Rodney, Travis is actually a Red Herring for the real killer, or if not, possibly an unwilling accomplice to them.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Rodney's lack of social skills, tendency towards Literal Mindedness, varied but niche interests, Character Tics in the form of both fidgeting and making odd noises, difficulty with expressing himself, specific and odd tastes in food and drink, among other such traits have all led to fans speculating that he may be on the autism spectrum.
  • Nightmare Fuel: While Rodney himself is a harmless Creepy Good character, there is a disturbing element in the comic's background: A serial killer is lurking in the neighborhood and there are ongoing investigations as to who the person is. While the composite sketch is mistaken for a bad interpretation of Rodney, there are very strong hints that it's actually Travis.
    • One particularly chilling example: When Jesse and Travis go to have Jesse's "curse" removed by Jaz, Travis notices Rodney and tells Jesse that he'll "catch up later" before following Rodney off. Later, Travis returns, having apparently been roughed up a little, and he and Jesse leave around the same time Rodney does. As Rodney is leaving, we see a crime scene investigation... set up exactly where Travis went to when he followed Rodney...
  • The Scrappy: Karen does not appear to be well-liked by fans, due to her obsession with "proving" that Rodney (a man whose only crimes are being a bit odd and having bad timing) is definitely a serial killer who's out to murder her. This obsession leads to such things as her trusting complete strangers over her own fiance when he tries to assure her that Rodney's harmless, her hypocrisy in that she calls Rodney a "stalker" and a "creep" whilst also spying on him and taking photos of him without his consent to play vigilante and gather "evidence" of his "crimes", and the near reality-bending leaps of logic she makes to convince herself that everyone else is wrong and Rodney is dangerous. The final straw for many people was when Chad tried to clear up to her that Rodney didn't break into their house and that he simply invited him in, which prompts Karen to kick him out, believing that she can no longer trust her own fiance. By that point, quite a few commenters had admitted that they're hoping for Chad to break up with her.
  • Tear Jerker: The Reveal that the serial killer may have murdered Rodney's mother is juxtaposed with an equally troubling reveal that Rodney is blissfully unaware of this. Chad finds himself struggling to figure out a way to break it to him gently.
