YMMV / Poi

  • Awesome Video Game Levels: The final two levels are generally considered the best. The first is a mirror alignment puzzle reminiscent of an outdoor Zelda temple, which then leads into a challenging platforming gauntlet across a series of sky castles worthy of Super Mario Galaxy.
  • Broken Base: Is Poi a fun nostalgic throwback to platformers of old, or does it stick too close to the classic 3D platforming formula for its own good? It doesn't help it released around the time A Hat in Time and Super Mario Odyssey released, two games that were also intended as throwbacks to classic 3D platformers while also bringing them more into the modern age.
  • Cliché Storm: Invoked by the devs, as it's intended to be a throwback to platformers of old. Every single 3D Platform game cliche is done in this game in one way or another.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: The game was well-received overall for sticking to the tropes that work in 3D Platform games, but at the same time its biggest criticism was not doing much else beyond that.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The game really feels like it wants to be an expansion pack to Super Mario 64 at times. A lot of the kid's moves are directly lifted from Mario's moveset in 64, and many of the enemies are also expies of enemies seen in 64.
