YMMV / Oakwood

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Ending: Several players and online commenters have stated that the game ending with Madison herself dying feels like a very unsatisfactory resolution to the plot and makes the entire effort spent playing as her and trying desperately to survive against the dinosaurs feel pointless. And the fact that all six of her friends die one by one beforehand only causes her death to just be rubbing salt to an already present wound.
  • Fridge Horror: The emails and messages that were sent to attract people to Oakwood after 1990 all included the instruction to lock the gate behind them after entering the camp. Yet due to the game's programmed script, Madison didn't lock the gate behind her. So unless the one who sent those messages, or anyone else for that matter, can take care of that little detail, what's to stop the dinosaurs from leaving the camp boundaries and wrecking havoc outside the camp?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Many called this game “Jurassic Park as a horror game”. Five years later a genuine Jurassic Park horror game, Jurassic Park: Survival, would be announced for a 2024 release.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Madison and her friends in general. Out of all six of Madison's friends, Zoey, Emily, and Hannah are the only ones who even speak, and neither they nor any of the three boys are ever seen. And even Emily is only ever heard through a voicemail message left for Madison. Madison herself likewise never even speaks and is given no real chance to develop as a character or be allowed for the players to truly get to know her in favor of her being a Pinball Protagonist trying to survive her way through the camp before ultimately dying just like her friends.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Several papers and other documents throughout the camp indicate hints at a potential larger conspiracy behind the presence of the dinosaurs and the disappearances of seven campers every seven years. Unfortunately, this is all relegated to background information in favor of the general Survival Horror aspects.
    • For that matter, the possibility of working to discover the identity of the unknown person who first sent the email inviting Emily to the camp and allowing her to bring six friends with her (one of which being Madison) would have potentially also been an interesting side plot.
