YMMV / Nabucco

  • Awesome Music: "Va, pensiero" is one of the most famous pieces of music to come out of opera, and for a good reason. It manages to be at the same time rousing, solemn, and a Tear Jerker, was a smash hit from the very first rehearsal of Nabucco, and the continued discussion over its political meaning (see below) has kept it into the popular consciousness. It's also one of the few famous pieces of operatic music which is a chorus and not an aria (i.e., a solo), inviting the audience to sing along and giving it an undeniable anthemic quality.
  • Complete Monster: The High Priest of Ba'al is a religious fanatic and bigot who exploits Abigail's ambition and wrath for his own ends. First introduced informing Abigail that her adoptive sister, Fenena, has released Hebrew prisoners, the Priest subsequently informs Abigail that he and his men have spread the rumor that Nabucco has fallen in Battle and encourages her to take the throne. Later, the Priest informs Abigail of Fenena's conversion to Judaism, and suggests that she and the Hebrews be exterminated, presenting a document for Abigail to sign as a death warrant for the Hebrews. In the final confrontation, the Priest attempts to carry out the death warrant via Human Sacrifice to Ba'al but is interrupted by Nabucco and his forces.
  • Signature Song: "Va, pensiero" is one of the songs from the opera which is played the most outside of the context of the play, and one of its most recognized.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: The debate of whether "Va, pensiero" is meant to be an anthem for Italian unity has continued into the twenty first century amongst opera scholars.
