- Ass Pull: Rather unexpectedly, Elsie and William are revealed as murderers, and Anne's uncle is revealed to be her father halfway through the novel
- Complete Monster: Robin Chapman, the Barnslake Killer, successfully kills eleven people over the span of a month in an effort to stave off boredom. Chapman eventually finds himself seeking notoriety for his crimes, targeting Sherlock Holmes himself by spiking his tea with morphine, only to be thwarted by Holmes using the poisoned beverage in an experiment. When Holmes and Anne Chantrey go to confront him after his latest murder, Chapman takes Anne hostage, threatening to shoot Anne unless Holmes shoots himself.
- Like You Would Really Do It: Rather than killing off Anne or Holmes, the author has the kindhearted romantic false lead rescue both characters by shooting the Barnslake Killer. This bluff may detract from the tension of the story for some readers.
