YMMV / Moon Knight (2014)

• Broken Base: Which run is better, Ellis or Wood? Detractors of the former point out that while the premises are cool, they're way too short to fully explore them, which for them Wood's run makes better, by focusing on one single arc. However, detractors of the latter point out that such topics as racism and colonialism are way too complex to be told and explored in just six issue run. Ironically, both of them happen to make similiar arguments. Regardless, there at least seems to be an agreement that Bunn's run is by far the worst of all three, although still being quite enjoyable for those who missed episodic storytelling from the first issues.

• Crazy Is Cool: Moon Knight's craziness has looped itself so that he's now one man (Marc Spector) and four incarnations of Khonshu, including "Mr. Knight" (a dapper white suit), a traditional crime-fighting outfit, and an anti-magic suit with—in Ellis' own words—a Giant Fucking Bird Skull for a helmet.
• First Installment Wins: Generally, people are gonna remember Ellis and Shalvey's time on the book more than Brian Wood or Cullen Bunn's.
• Gateway Series: Part of the appeal of Ellis and Shalvey's run. The amount of restraint the run has on not relying on continuity allowed the character himself to shine and prove his worth through adventures, even with a massive retool of his status quo. And even then, the various sprinkles of backstory Ellis injects invites intrigued readers to look further into past comics to see what's the deal with Moon Knight's history.
• One-Scene Wonder:
  • The gold knife-wielding, purple zoot suit-wearing henchman that Moon Knight briefly fights in issue 5 of Ellis's run.
  • Brian Wood's run introduces the mysterious and brutal "Lockley" persona, who is Moon Knight sans hood and cape and instead wears a creepy blank doll mask. He never shows up ever again after his debut issue and his appearance has left many fans intrigued.
• My Real Daddy: An artist variation. Mr. Knight actually first appeared in Secret Avengers, written by Warren Ellis but drawn by Michael Lark. But it's under Declan Shalvey's pen that the persona full formed and was given life, as well as gaining popularity thanks to his tenure. It's also here that the persona was given the name "Mr. Knight". It's especially telling when Shalvey was given Special Thanks credit in the show.
• Shocking Moments: Issue 6 where Black Spectre begins his all-out attack on Moon Knight and proceeds to utterly destroy almost everything Marc throws at him.
• Signature Scene:
  • Issue five, in which Moon Knight steadily goes through an entire building fighting mooks one-by-one to save a little girl from her kidnappers.
  • Also, issue two, the fight with the sniper: "I'm not real."
• Tear Jerker: In a subtle Establishing Series Moment, the first issue ends with Marc returning home to his dusty, derelict, empty mansion, alone with nobody but his alters and Khonshu. As Khonshu declares him his son, Marc looks as if he's on the verge of tears, like he knows that he can never escape this life after having driven so many of his loved ones away, as the finale of the run shows us.
