  • Harsher in Hindsight: A yellow Unicorn who used to be Princess Celestia's student until she went missing, and has now returned as an antagonist. Are we talking about Chrysalis or Sunset Shimmer?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In chapter 13, Pinkie Pie reveals she carries an incredibly detailed family tree on her at all times.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Chrysalis has some good reasons for acting the way she does.
    • Trixie is this as well.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Though under the corrupting influence of the Alicorn Amulet, Blueblood had crossed it after killing Twilight Velvet with a curse.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Blueblood is criticized more than once for wanting to take military action against the Changelings for what happened at the wedding but the Changelings actions, which led to genuine harm coming to the citizens of Equestria including a member of royalty, more than merits such a response. An invasion by a completely unknown foreign power would result in the military at least assuming defensive during wartime measures in real life but nothing of the sort happens here. There are other factors that would make retaliation unwise but Blueblood is unaware of them and by the time anything has been told to him, he's too emotional to listen.
  • Tearjerker: The opening chapter, dealing with the birth of Twilight Sparkle. And in very quick order, her death.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Chrysalis can come off like this. She claims that she never forces anyone to become a changeling, but then tries to do it to Shining. In addition, Chrysalis basically declares war on Equestria to kidnap Twilight causing much more pain and suffering than what was necessary.
