YMMV / Miraculous Ladybug S04E20 "Qilin"

Go To

  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The episode ends with the daughter of the victim of police harassment taking the blame for everything while the actual harasser prances off into the sunset with neither punishment nor a learned lesson, and this is portrayed as a happy ending.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Shadow Moth, as fearsome as he is, is ultimately a fantasy villain who's at least hammy and fun to watch in action. The nameless ticket inspector, however, is quietly terrifying because there always have been—and always will be—people like him in real life: assholes who gleefully abuse any authority they are given to make people's lives miserable, and racists who only see the fallacies of those they discriminate against without reasonable thinking. That fact alone makes the ticket inspector just as horrifying to watch as the show's actual Big Bad, if not more.
  • Rooting for the Empire: When you take into consideration the events that lead to Qilin's creation, this may be the only time in the series where you'll actually side with Shadow Moth and see his akumatizing of Sabine as genuinely warranted.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: While some people like the fact that Roger Raincomprix got some focus since season 1, there are some who feel like he could've been replaced with a generic cop character and nothing would really change: not only does the fact he knows Sabine not get brought up once, but once she becomes Qilin, he acts more selfish and callous than usual, making him come across as out of character.
    • Also, some had wished Shadow Moth had also Amokitized Sabine, as it would've been really interesting to see a how Sentimonster born out of anger towards racism would act.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Roger Raincomprix is depicted as a tough but fair Reasonable Authority Figure (Ladybug/Marinette calls him as much several times) who can't play favorites with Sabine just because he knows her and is forced to detain her due to the unnamed ticket inspector having proof that she was on a bus without a ticket while she doesn't have proof to her claims. However, this falls flat since he knows she's an honorable woman, knows she has a daughter he can contact who can corroborate her story, and sees the ticket inspector gleefully harass and antagonize her. However, rather than stand up for her he instead condemns, arrests, and threatens to bring reinforcements against Sabine for daring to verbally defend herself against increasingly serious accusations. This can make him come across as Lawful Stupid at best, a Dirty Cop exercising The Lopsided Arm of the Law at worst. (It also flies in the face of his "Innocent Until Proven Guilty" mantra in Season 1.) The Karma Houdini that he and the ticket inspector get at the end doesn't help.
  • Writer Cop Out: It seems the writers chose not to directly address the issue of racism, giving no consequences to the bullying bigot ticket inspector, and instead have Marinette take responsibility and pay the fine.
