YMMV / Mary Jane's Last Dance

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The lyric in "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "One more time to kill the pain", considering Tom Petty died of an overdose of fentanyl, and earlier than that when the bassist on the song, Howie Epstein, died from years of heroin abuse.
  • Misattributed Song: Tom Petty doesn't have a song called "Low" (or "Like Being Stoned" for that matter), that was Cracker. The confusion presumably stems from the song having sort of a similar rhythm to "Mary Jane's Last Dance". The confusion has apparently become a big pet peeve of Cracker vocalist David Lowery.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Tom Petty as a morgue worker who steals the corpse of a beautiful woman (played by Kim Basinger) and takes it home with him, which he dresses up, eats with, and does other things to, before finally dumping her in the ocean. The worst part? At the end, she opens her eyes.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Many fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers have noted the striking similarity between "Dani California" and Tom Petty's song "Mary Jane's Last Dance." Petty noted this when asked on the matter but chose not to take legal action, stating that there are enough Frivolous Lawsuits in America and that "pretty much all songs sound similar."
