  • Adaptation Displacement: The film was based on a novel that's pretty much forgotten today.
  • Tear Jerker: It's bad enough spending the film watching Barkley and Lucy suffer at the hands of their indifferent children, with Cora using Barkley catching a cold as an excuse to push him into moving to California and George and his wife wasting little time planning to throw Lucy in a Bleak Abyss Retirement Home, all while Nellie makes no effort to persuade her husband to let her parents move in with them, but the ending is sadder still. Although Barkley and Lucy spend a happy day together in New York before Barkley leaves for California, their Train-Station Goodbye is devastating, as while they put on a facade of expecting to be re-united once Barkley finds work, they both know it is far more likely they'll never see each other again, and that they'll end up in retirement homes on opposite sides of the country, unloved and ignored by the children they worked so hard to raise and support.
