YMMV / Lake Mungo

Go To

  • Cult Classic: It didn't make much money at the box office, but is considered an underrated horror gem.
  • Fanon: There's a fairly popular fan theory that Mathew killed Alice. The unexplained bruises on his body were from Alice struggling against him. And her ghost in some of Mathew's photos, his birthday, and the family photo was Alice trying to get her parents to see what really happened.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • The ending, Alice has been appeased now that her secrets are out and her family understands her better than ever while she was alive, and the family has re-united and contently moved on.
    • During the credits, in one of the photos shown, Alice's ghost is seen as being present at Matthew's birthday party.
  • Narm: Alice's day planner having the words "LAKE MUNGO" written in the exact same clean and neat way five times in a row can be eyebrow-raising.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: The Reveal that Alice was being molested by her neighbors and was probably Driven to Suicide because of it is one of the most horrifying parts in the movie simply because of how common this exact situation is in the real world.
  • Signature Scene: The Reveal where we see the footage from Alice's phone that was found buried in Lake Mungo. Alone and in the dead of night, Alice finds the bloated corpse of herself following her.
  • Squick:
    • Alice's corpse.
    • The sex tape.
  • Tear Jerker: As it's about a grieving family coming to terms with the death of their beloved daughter, the whole film has a poignant undercurrent, especially at the end, where Alice tells the psychic about a vision she had of her mother coming into her room, but not noticing she's there; as the end reveals that Alice has been on film all along but nobody has noticed, this seems to be her fate in the afterlife in general.
