YMMV / Kingdoms of Ruin

Go To

  • Crosses the Line Twice: Shirousagi should easily be one of the most vile and despicable villains in the series and the way he rips out and crushes Doroka's eyes while forcing Adonis to watch is such a sick and twisted thing that there is no possibility of redemption for the character. In his short appearance, Shirousagi, through his acts, easily establishes himself as one of the most evil anime villains alive alongside Griffith who assaults women in very disturbing ways while forcing the protagonist love interest to watch. However, the minute Shirousagi taunts Adonis by asking "Are these your balls?" and starts twirling Doroka's eyes around in a very over-the-top way, you might forget Shirousagi is supposed to be a despicable piece of garbage you want the protagonist to kill and start laughing at the sheer absurdity of what he's done, with the end result being that Shirousagi ends up being hilarious and Laughably Evil, while the scene itself loses all gravitas and ends up being another Narm filled moment which might make the audience break out in more laughter than anger or sorrow.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Punch, the biker in charge of the wasteland village, is found be a welcoming sight in the bleak setting of Ruin. Many found him to be a breather after many episodes of Adonis and Doroka fighting humans, finding one who wasn’t a complete bastard. He’s even more praised than the main duo of over how he resolves the argument between Adonis’s quest for revenge and Doroka’s demand for forgiveness, additionally being a Shipper on Deck for them.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Those who read the Kingdom of Caliburn manga would find the everything pertaining to Redia to make sense, especially with the existence of Queen Dorothea Goethe coming into the picture.
  • Narm:
    • Kingdoms of Ruin is so over-the-top in combining Crapsack World with World of Jerkass and depicting random acts of murder and rape that it quickly becomes very hard to take any of it seriously. It isn't helped by the fact that the vast majority of characters are just plain unlikable, so the audience really has no reason to care when most of them are killed off for shock value.
    • Adonis' love for Chloe is his reason for becoming a Villain Protagonist. However, since so little time is actually spent on Chloe, few members of the audience are really going to care about his attachment. The anime however rectifies this by giving time to show and develop the bond between Adonis and Chloe right up till the latter's death, giving watchers an understanding of his plight.
  • So Bad, It's Good: For some, the series goes so far into Narm territory that it loops back around to being entertaining.
