YMMV / Katy

Go To

  • Designated Villain: Katy's stepmother Izzie starts out being portrayed like this; she's constantly nagging Katy and telling her off, even for things that are genuinely accidental on her part. She also seems to favour her children, especially Elsie, and continuously brings up Katy's faults. However Katy soon learns to appreciate Izzie when she takes care of her after her accident, and becomes very close to her.
  • Fridge Horror: What would have happened had Katy's next door neighbour not seen her fall from the swing? How long would have Katy led there, out of sight? What if she had died?
  • Nightmare Fuel: Katy's fall from the swing should have just left her with a broken arm or leg, and maybe a concussion. Instead she's paralysed from the waist down for life.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Katy's accident and the aftermath when poor Katy struggles to cope with her new life. She's even tormented by dreams where she can run and dance again, only to wake up to find that she can't.
    • Izzie struggling to deal with Katy, especially after her accident. She puts her life on hold to help Katy out, who is extremely ungrateful to start with, and even ends up fighting with her husband due to how much stress she's under.
    • Elsie's situation as the only child not related to Dr Carr; she's also too old to play with the 'Littlies' but too young to play with Katy, Clover and Cecy. Fortunately, her situation changes at the end of the novel
  • Toy Ship: Katy and Ryan.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Unlike What Katy Did, Katy's struggles with being bed bound are described in much more detail; namely the fact she can no longer go to the toilet by herself, and the humiliation she feels when the nurses have to help her. Katy even briefly worries about her future, about whether she can date or have sex.
