Fridge Logic

  • After Mr Myers creates a version of basketball that Katy can actually play, she's proven to be exceptionally talented at it, to the point where she shows up Eva Jenkins. Eva then uses a collision between herself and Katy as an excuse to get her mother to complain to the school, claiming that Katy is a "safety hazard". The school apparently blindly agrees, and Katy's participation in PE is severely limited as a result; the most she is allowed to do is sit in her wheelchair and try to hit balls which are thrown to her. This simply wouldn't happen, especially without Katy's father and stepmother being informed or Katy herself being allowed to tell her side of the story. Using "health and safety" as an excuse for excluding a disabled child from any activity is downright discrimination and would be grounds for the child's parents to lodge a formal complaint. It's a good thing Myers is on Katy's side; though he is unable to overturn the school's decision, he suggests she joins a local wheelchair basketball team so that she can take part in sports outside school hours.
    • Even if Katy was at fault for the collision, she should have been dealt with in the same way as a non-disabled pupil. Most likely, this would involve her having to apologize to Eva, serve time in detention and possibly being made to sit out a few PE lessons. But, for the reasons noted above, she should not have been told she could never take part in contact sports on school premises again. Nor should her headteacher have refused to hear her out when she tried to complain about the way she had been treated.
