YMMV / Ju-On: Origins

Go To

  • Ass Pull: The house making people explode when they don't become violent can come off as this, as it comes out of nowhere and both instances happen with a very short time of each other in the final episode.
  • Broken Base: Similar to the 2020 movie of the same name, the sheer idea of the series not having the famous Saeki family was met with mixed responses. Either the series did a rather well with not being a carbon copy of the films (as the series states it's simply showing what inspired said films) or it's far too confusing, which is saying much considering Ju-on own story telling structure of jumping all over the place.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • There's a theory among some in the fandom that the entire season is a Stable Time Loop with the Woman in White and Haruka being one and the same, the latter's kidnapping by the landlord's son in the finale not being his ghost attacking her, but her being dragged back in time.
    • There are several guesses regarding the "bury together" command, such as that Toshiki should be buried at the house to end the curse, that the Woman in White is buried at the house and needs to be exhumed, and other theories.
    • The intentional not-showing of Yasuo's mother in a picture from his childhood is also the source of theories.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Kiyomi's subplot can engender this, especially for those who don't sympathize with her due to how in control of her actions she is being unclear. Her abusive relationship with Yudai being played horrifically straight and frankly requiring little to no supernatural intervention beyond her glomming onto him in the first place is a major reason for this.
  • The Woobie: Haruka, who loses her boyfriend, the woman who once would have been her mother in law, and finally herself to the curse. All because her boyfriend was ready to propose and was looking for somewhere for them to live.
    • Yasuo, a young survivor of the house who was so traumatized by it that for a long time he could not recall where it was or just what happened there beyond the death of his whole family, and a compulsion to collect stories about it. He later realizes the house is letting him live to be a chronicler of its horrors, and by the end the detective considered him curses as well.
