- Patched Together from the Headlines: The series borrows heavily from both Japanese True Crime and Urban Legend, most notably:
- The house itself. It’s based on the “Yellow House/Triangle House” of Nagoya. The house no longer stands today and was paved into a parking lot, but it was once known as one of the most famous haunted houses in Japan.
- Chie’s murder is based off of the little-known-outside-of-Japan Pregnant Ripper Murder, also in Nagoya.
- Child-killer M is based off of Tusutomu Miyazaki, a Japanese serial killer that murdered four young girls in the 1980s.
- Truth in Television: There are multiple news broadcasts throughout the show that allude to different noteworthy crimes and other major news stories in Japan between the late 80s to late 90s, including:
- The murder of Junko Furuta.
- Both the Matsumoto sarin attack and the Tokyo subway sarin attack committed by the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo.
- The Kobe child murders
- The Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995
