• Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Omokage truly remorseful for accidentally killing his younger sister Retz? While he did apologize to her that his nen accidentally killed her, he still turned her into one of his puppets, ignores her begging, and is apathetic towards the suffering his actions are putting her and others though. It’s possible that he is only regretful that his experiment failed rather than what he put her though.
• Base-Breaking Character: Fans are very divisive when it comes to Retz. Some are very against her thinking she stands in the way of Killugon ship. Some don’t mind her and even ship her with Gon and Killua. And there are those who don’t ship her with any one but don’t hate her either seeing her as a good and sympathetic character.
• Die for Our Ship: Hardcore Killugon shippers tend to bash Retz thinking she gets in the way. Despite the fact that she is already dead.
• Funny Moments:
  • Killua figuring out Retz's gender and Gon's reaction to the realization.
  • Retz's goodbye to Gon and Killua before they search for Omokage.
    Retz: Be careful, Gon! Oh and you too, Killua!
    Killua:(In his head) Damn you!
• Heartwarming Moments:
  • When Gon interrupts Killua's suicide attempt snapping him back to his senses letting him know he doesn't blame him for losing his eyes.
  • Kurapika's childhood memories of his clan and childhood friend Pairo.
  • Despite their bickering throughout the movie Killua still tries to save Retz showing that underneath his jealousy he did see her as a friend.
  • The Phantom Troupe saving Gon and Killua can be interpreted as this since they are still touched by their actions with Pakunoda.
• Moe: Retz.
• Moral Event Horizon: Omokage already crossed it by participating in the Kurta clan massacre implying that he was the one who killed Pairo. He crosses it further when he uses his Pairo puppet to steal Kurapika’s eyes and later uses an Illumi puppet to try and steal Killua’s only to end up stealing Gon’s. It’s later revealed that he may have crossed it when he killed his younger sister Retz when he tried to turn her into one of his puppets.
• Nightmare Fuel:
  • The opening when he see a younger Killua completing a job interacts with some kids playing ball only for Illumi to show up and kill them. Thankfully it turned out to be a nightmare.
  • The films big bad Omokage was not only a former member of the phantom troupe but his nen ability allows him to create puppets of people that allow him to steal other peoples eyes. With one of his victims being his own sister Retz who died when her eyes were ripped out from his nen ability.
• Tear Jerker: Kurapika remembering his childhood and the memories he had of his friend Pairo only to later be victims of the Phantom Troupe.
  • Killua freezing up when he fights the Illumi puppet allowing Gon to lose his eyes instead, feeling like he betrayed Gon he tries to get hit by a train. Which thankfully Gon stopped.
  • Retz begging Omokage to return Gons eyes only for him to ignore her request.
  • Retz lighting the church on fire choosing to die with her brother telling Gon and Killua that she enjoyed spending time with them, learning what it means to live.
• The Woobie: Retz oh poor Retz, a lonely puppeteer who just wanted friends only to be turned into a puppet by her insane older brother. She spends the movie bonding with Gon and Killua obviously caring for them only to be forced to betray them by her brothers orders. In the end she chooses to die with her brother thanking Gon and Killua for the time they spent with her.
