YMMV / Harpy Gee

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • Harpy attacking Lily after Lily says Harpy would be better off dead without her magic led to some arguing in the comments. Some fans were glad Harpy jumped her, others claimed violence is never the answer, and a third group Took a Third Option by saying that though Harpy didn't make the best choice, she's still just a child and cannot be held to such standards. The divide between the first two options worsened a bit with the reveal that Pumpkin really did eat Lila's doll. Becomes a moot point the next time we see Lily and Lila because they and Harpy have long since worked past the rocky first meeting and the two princesses are now as close to Harpy as if they were her sisters.
    • Chapter 4 ended up being a much longer and more drawn out chapter due to issues outside the creator's control and ironically related to the production of the pilot short for a potential Harpy Gee animated series. One of those issues led to major plot points being held back in case they would be needed for the show. This led to some readers getting very upset about the pacing when the comic was on its usual weekly release schedule. However, many other readers didn't notice a problem and appreciated the chapter spending more time on character development - and readers that came to the comic after the chapter had concluded and were able to read it all at once didn't tend to notice anything off at all.
    • Given the length of time between Chapter 4 and the proper continuation of the storyline, "Dough See Dough" led to some readers complaining about the story returning with essentially a light-hearted side-story, to the point that Brianne chose to take another several month hiatus at the end to plan out a tighter Chapter 5. In the comments for that announcement are many readers that were surprised to hear about complaints and actually appreciated the short arc and especially the small developments for Harpy and Humphrey's relationship.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Penny Pint prompted a large amount of squeeing, swooning, and overall love when she showed up.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Harpy/Humphrey and Harpy/Opal seem to have a leg up on Harpy/Ash. The comic eventually moved hard into Harpy/Humphrey, even though the couple has yet to finalize.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Ash using the flowers to prank-call Humphrey.
    • The Duke's hatred of "your mom" jokes.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Prince Humphrey. While he's cold and a jerk, he's the unfavorite who ran away from his home and his oh so perfect bigger-jerk sister. Oh, and he may be turning into a monster against his will. It's increasingly apparent that his awful social skills stem from an intense self-loathing that built out of these events and much of his storyline involves him continuing to try and become a better person while making spectacular blunders that set him back several steps. By Chapter 5 he seems to have finally overcome a lot of his issues and finally gained more self-confidence, but then his sister shows up and we all know how that tends to go...
    • Harpy may have her sharp moments, but Wolf hasn't let her go out in the world for years and before that she had almost no friends.
    • Halesia may be a bitch to her brother, but she's also had massive amounts of responsibility heaped on her from a young age and he ran away right before they could have started to share it.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Harpy. So far her ships include Humphrey, Ash, Opal, and Lily.
  • Les Yay: Opal and Harpy on their hunt for Grumble Bees have some really shippy moments.
  • Spiritual Successor: Some older fans of webcomics see it as one to RPG World.
  • Tear Jerker: The look on Humphrey's face upon reading the elf queen's note that he may turn into a monster.
    • Harpy getting a message and gifts from home becomes tearjerky when it becomes obvious she is starting to feel home sick.
    • And yet again when Humphrey starts laughing and having fun with Ash only to breathe fire by accident, hurting Captain Giblet. The look of horror on his face is heartbreaking.
